Drop box is stuck at "Starting..." but files are being synced
The box icon on system tray stays at gray and says "Starting...". But, when files are changed on another computer, they are being synced. Should I be concerned? Is there a fix?
Thanks.

This should be resolved now. Please restart your Dropbox desktop or mobile app and try again.

Dropbox Icon Stuck on "Starting" with a red square over it - with the number 1 inside.
Frozen, will not do anything else.....
Online in our Account Settings - The Tab "Plan" settings for some reason is stuck on 258GB Used out of 0GB - even though we have Dropbox Professional (2TB) and our payments are up to date.
Tried uninstalling/unlinking/reinstalling, etc....... doesnt work.
Any help appreciated.....
:-)

Same here, started today. The problem persists even if you reinstall and resync everything. Started happening today both on my windows and mac.

I'm having the same issue. In addition to the desktop app being stuck "starting" I also noticed that I'm getting a warning on my mobile app saying "Your Dropbox is full. Contact your admin for more space" There is no way that this is correct since I'm nowhere close to reaching my limit.
- davidbautistaHelpful | Level 5
In my case I can normally open, edit or move files and it doesn't appear anything related to space... (I am 50% full). It's more like a problem with the task bar logo/icon.

We are having the same issues. I am not getting any response from anyone from dropbox. I pay monthly for this service and no response for over 4 hours is not okay. We are sitting ducks until this is resolved. I am able to use dropbox on my desktop, but not on any mobile devices. We pay for 1TB of data and have used 131GB. Please help.

Same for macOS High Sierra ( v 10.13.6 ) with Dropbox ( v 55.3.168 ). Indicates "Starting..." but unsure if there is any updating of files in the background without indication.
- davidbautistaHelpful | Level 5
Try making an edit in some file and look at it in other device. If you have no problem with syncing but still your icon show "indexing..." or "starting..." that's happening to us.
- emilioxavierNew member | Level 2
Changed the file name on the desk top but no change seen in the mobile app.
Mobile app also indicates I'm out of space.

Hi. I have a problem. My dropbox is syncing normally between my computer and my cloud (http://dropbox.com) but the problem is that the little dropbox logo in my taskbar is saying "indexing, syncing..." with blue arrows as if it's working or doing sync or accesing my account. I reinstalled it, and it downloaded all my files again normallt but the logo still says the same.
Task bar logo problem, in English: indexing, syncing...
And then you can see that the files are correctly synced.

Since (I presume) updating to Dropbox 54.4.90 on Windows 10 version 1803 (both Pro / Home), Dropbox is constantly 'indexing'. However, it still seems to be syncing files.
Unlinking / relinking accounts and uninstalling / reinstalling the desktop app makes no difference. I'm assuming this is an issue with the app itself?
- photoverExplorer | Level 4
I also have the same issue, I have tried un-linking and re-installing to no avail, the same issue is happening with another PC I am currently testing
- mrjxn007New member | Level 2
I was having the same problem. I reinstalled the desktop app and now the "indexing, syncing" has gone away, but it is stuck saying "Dropbox 54.4.90 starting..."

In other topic, they posted this possible solution:
- Stop Dropbox (If needed) by clicking the Dropbox icon in the system tray at the bottom of your screen. >Click on the gear icon in the Notifications panel and select"Quit Dropbox".
- Uninstall Dropbox: [Note: If Dropbox was installed by a Windows administrator in Program Files, you will need admin permissions to remove the application.]> Click on the Start button on the bottom left of your screen, and select "Control Panel"(Windows 7), or type Control Panel at the Start screen or start menu, and click on it(Windows 10, 8 ).> Click "Uninstall a Program". >Select Dropbox from the list of programs and click "Uninstall".
- When the uninstall finishes, reboot your computer. This will make sure the uninstall is complete.
- At that point, I’d suggest disabling any Security/Antivirus programs & give our offline installer a try: https://www.dropbox.com/downloading?plat=win&type=full (Windows)
But the user reported that it didn't work at all.

It's happening to me as well! God, I thought it was me, but maybe it's a Dropbox problem. I even started my own thread. Which is literally the same problem. I even reinstalled the app.

I did uninstall and reinstall as well. No help.

hello there!
i have the dropbox 2tb plan with smartsync (smartsync being the main reason i wanted it). i wanted to download the mac dropbox app and have everything "online only" simply so i can see the files as they come in.
it seems to be functioning fine in finder. i see all the cloud icons on all the files in my dropbox.
in the top bar however, the dropbox icon has a white "1" in a red circle. when i click on it, it seems to be stuck on "dropbox is starting ..."
this is fresh install (v54.4.90). i have tried uninstalling per dropbox instructions and re-installing two or three times now.
in preferences, i have tried setting my proxies to auto or no proxy because i read it helped someone else with the same issue. didn't help me. it's set to no proxy right now. under sync menu, i have my files start as "online-only."
note: i have set my dropbox location to a secondary internal drive. might this be a problem?
lastly, i am only using 41% of my 2tb on dropbox.
thanks for your help!

I'm having exactly the same problem, started today on 3 separate machines (all macs).
Tried with the latest beta and stable v54.4.90, same on all machines. Red 1 in the icon, leave it all day, still says it's starting. There does appear to be some activity, but it's very slow and no real idea what's going on.
I've also tried starting from scratch and wiping the folder settings etc, login and link again, same deal.
I'm on the professional plan too, although as far as I know still on 1TB, but alarmingly if I look in my Dropbox account is says:
Your account is full Using 429.15 GB of 0 bytes
So our space has vanished according to dropbox, so I suspect there is a broader issue here that's not specific to the client. I'll be getting in touch with dropbox support.

thanks for sharing! glad i'm not the only one here!! :)
- cvlkHelpful | Level 6note: i also do not have any antivirus running.
- neeksterHelpful | Level 6
Same here, also running on OS X 10.13.6
I've just submitted a ticket to support, will let you know if they come back with anything of value, does normally take an age though.

I have two administration accounts on my WIndows 7 x64 system, just in case my primary does not work. The primary account does have the latest version fo dropbox installed. The backup account does NOT have dropbox installed.
The last couple of days, my PC was not booting past the selection of users into my primary account.
I accessed the secondary admin account, then switched to the primary to get past this new glitch. I have also noted that the dropbox icon remains grey and has the note "Dropbox is starting" when the pointer hovers over the icon.
I ended up uninstalling dropbox completely. The computer booted flawlessly. So I reinstalled dropbox. I am again having boot issues into the account that has dropbox installed.
Once I get past the boot issues, the icon is still greyed out and the same "Dropbox is starting" message shows when I hover the pointer over the dropbox icon.
The syncing appears to be continuing even though the message would suggest otherwise.
I have read other posts in the forum and have tried proxy settings in both the on and off positions. No difference in outcome.
Since dropbox is effectively our company's WAN, this new behavior is rather troubling. Any suggestions for fixing this problem, or do we need to switch to another cloud based file sharing system?

Dropbox on my Mac is stuck "starting" and won't go beyond that screen. It seems that the folder are sync'ing though.
I saw some posts and fix from 2015 and 2016, but not sure I want to apply that to my current system since it is now a different version of the operating system.

Cant get the DropBox link to full load and turn black. All folders are checked off in Selective Sync. App just wont load, WHY?
- jscNew member | Level 2
Having issues here too. Just took in delivery of a New MacBook Pro and installed Dropbox only to find it wont go past 'starting'. I checked my old machine and the same thing is happening. Thought I had messed something up myself but looking like it's a wider issue.
Running High Sierra 10.13.6 on both machines and the dropbox install on both is 54.4.90- rhbeckerExplorer | Level 4
In case it helps, I noticed this behavior starting around 6pm PST yesterday (8/13). It may have started earlier, but that's when I noticed.
Win 10
55.4.171
- cvlkHelpful | Level 6started for me about the same time. macOS 10.13.6 with dropbox 54.4.90.
note: i have also noticed that new files coming in don't seem to be syncing correctly. (i am using smart sync ONLY to see online-only files.) i get notifications saying the sync failed (due to trouble connecting). then it tries again. continuous notifications, every few minutes.
