Drop box is stuck at "Starting..." but files are being synced
The box icon on system tray stays at gray and says "Starting...". But, when files are changed on another computer, they are being synced. Should I be concerned? Is there a fix? Thanks.

Hi again to all,
This should be resolved now. Please restart your Dropbox desktop or mobile app and try again.
Let us know if you are still receiving an errors or you're experiencing anything out of the ordinary & we can look further into it.
Thanks to everyone for your reports & happy Dropboxing ahead!

Try making an edit in some file and look at it in other device. If you have no problem with syncing but still your icon show "indexing..." or "starting..." that's happening to us.

Changed the file name on the desk top but no change seen in the mobile app.
Mobile app also indicates I'm out of space.

It's kind of a different problem.
1. Files doesn't sync, no space (even if you have space), "indexing..." (or similar) icon.
2. Files sync, no problems with space, but task bar icon showning "indexing..." or "starting..."
My problem is #2. Yours is #1.

Same problem here (sync working, but showing "Starting..." on menu bar). Using MacOS High Sierra, and latest Dropbox (55.4.171). I wasted my time re-installing and re-syncing everything - it is obviously a Dropbox issue, so let,s just sit tight and wait for a fix.

Adding my voice here.
I'm seeing the same thing across 3 computers: two Windows 10 PCs, one MacBook Pro.
Symptoms began around the same time on all 3 machines, which was some time last night, August 13th, between 19:30 and 22:30 ET.
All 3 show "Starting..." as the status from the Dropbox taskbar icon/flyout. (Previously "Indexing..." before I closed and restarted Dropbox on each).
The two Windows machines show the Recent Files history in the flyout, and the Notifications tab and the 3 Dropbox Paper / Dropbox Folder / Dropbox.com icons are accessible.
The MacBook shows a blank flyout (with a "Dropbox is starting...." message only) and the Dropbox Paper / Dropbox.com icons are greyed out.
All 3 machines have had Dropbox closed/restarted (multiple times) and have been completely rebooted without change.
Files and folders do appear to be syncing successfully between all 3 machines (and other devices) successfully, regardless of the erroneous "Starting" messaging, so this isn't actually a service-impacting bug, only a display issue.
- 4llan7 years agoHelpful | Level 5I have problem #2 too. I noticed this morning in 2 PCs running Dropbox v56 from Windows 10
I have two accounts, thought it was because "beta" was enabled.
After disabling beta, wait some time, uninstalled Dropbox, made a clean install with offline (v54).
I don't have bad files (checked)
My file storage is fine, both in size and numbers (far below from 300.000).
I made a complete reinstall at least 5 times and each time I tried something different: (always trying a complete resintall, clean folders and configs, restarting PC)
- Delete the las files that was modified/created
- Change the folder location
- Unlink work account from personal (after that, I noticed that the problem was my Work account)
- Uninstalled, installed, login only in my personal account without linking my work account = OK
- Link my work account, Dropbox stuck in "Starting" and "Indexing", blue icon like is syncing forever. The file sync is ok, but the notification icon and state is stuck.
- Uninstalled, restarted the PC, clean all folders from appdata etc, try to login only in in my work account = FAIL. Red icon with number 1, but file sync is normal.
My work account email is using gmail with plus sign appended (https://gmail.googleblog.com/2008/03/2-hidden-ways-to-get-more-from-your.html)
I only tested this in Windows 10 machine.
Can I test another thing?
