36 TopicsWhy does Dropbox insist on renaming my files?
2020: "Stop renaming my files! (on auto phone upload)" by BoxyBeat https://www.dropboxforum.com/t5/Dropbox-installs-integrations/Stop-renaming-my-files-on-auto-phone-upload/td-p/391599 Dropbox response was: "interesting indeed". Then they are like; let us learn what you have uncovered that we still don't know. Like, let's go out there and jump through the hoops together to confirm if the files are named based on when the files are created (recording starts) or when they are last modified (recording stops). What difference does it make? Just stop renaming people's files!? They go on to explain that this is the expected behavior... duh! They never explain why this is, even though the author specifically requested an explanation from Dropbox as to "why" this is. They said they moved the question to the "Share an idea" section. They closed the question for further comments so that anyone who feels the same way about this Dropbox misbehavior can start their own discussion about it, like I'm doing right now, and we can all pretend that no one really wants this "feature", because the discussion activity is low and no one is voting. They even go as far as closing supposedly "shared ideas" for lack of support by other members of the community of users, before it even has a chance to reach the right team at Dropbox, Inc. With so many filters along the way, I would be surprised if any Dropbox features is ever a direct result of user input. Dropbox has its own fixed ideas of how to do things, and that's how it's going to stay. Like it and use it, or don't like it and move on to using something else. This is the example of a shared idea that has been closed due to lack of support. 2021: "Stop renaming files" by Pete3000 https://www.dropboxforum.com/t5/Dropbox-ideas/Stop-renaming-files/idi-p/510186 Allow such ideas to stay open for a good while and see what happens. You will never get enough votes if you keep closing ideas and keep closing discussions. You will always blame it on lack of interest by other users, and users will keep creating new topics for the same old discussions, and keep sharing the same old ideas without it ever being forwarded to the right team at Dropbox, Inc. It's so obvious right now that you are genuinely not interested in what we users have to say or what we think of your apps and services. Not when you keep shutting us off, closing our topics of discussion and keep closing our "shared" ideas before they can gather enough votes and traction, and before they ever reach the right team. You're doing this on purpose. And that's OK. It's your product and your service. I just wanted to call you out and let you know that I can see through your charade and I don't agree with your practices. So let us have it... why are you changing the names of our files? And more importantly, why are you not allowing us to decide for ourselves if we want your app to change the name of our files or not? There is a way to set up naming conventions with Dropbox, but it does not apply to the mobile app and camera uploads. It applies only to the web and the desktop app (the option links back to the web for setting it up, there is no interface for it within the desktop app itself). "How to use naming conventions in Dropbox" https://help.dropbox.com/files-folders/sort-preview/naming-conventions Despite this advanced and elaborate way to exactly specify how to name and organize files in Dropbox (as long as you're not using the mobile app), and despite having several preset naming rules to choose from, having no rule at all is not a selectable rule or option. I am very disappointed with Dropbox right now. It feels like with each passing year I have less and less reason to use Dropbox. You have already reduced the number of devices allowed to sync from 5 to 3 (if I remember correctly) on the free plan. I wouldn't actually mind getting a premium plan if you did things a little differently and you got rid of the excess bulk you have invented in recent years like Paper, Transfer, Vault, Spaces, and what not, the list keeps growing. Dropbox has moved well beyond what used to be its core business idea, and it's far from working ideally, and I don't want to be paying for the things I don't intend to use.Solved13KViews13likes21CommentsStorage
Hello, Hope you are all doing okey. I started having DB a month or so ago and the only documents I have are the ones shared by my boss. When I first started there was a notification about having very little space (which was strange because only half of the space -1GB- was used). When the "No space" notification popped up (which was already strange bc there was space left), my boss eliminated some videos (approximately the GB that was used) which are already in the trash but still remaining 30 days to be permanently deleted. Although all this was done, I uploaded 1 document (less than a MB) and again, no space. Furthermore, I can't find anywhere in DB to see which documents could be the responsibles of occupying the space, so I don't know what to do. I already tried eliminating the app, I opened it on the web and tried refreshing it, searched through the documents one by one to see if one of them was occupying a lot of space. If anyone could help me, I would I appreciate it. Thank you. More and more people are using the README.md convention for describing what's this folder is all about, especially when shared with teams for work, or school or little projects. So besides the obvious that you need to be able to render .md files we could also have render under the file list the rendered version of README.md if exists in that particular folder.7.7KViews9likes6CommentsCan we add comments to folders for collaborating purposes?
Would it be possible to comment on Folders as well as Files from the web interface? Example- I prepare 100 files for my colleague, put them in a Folder on dropbox, then @mention her with a comment like "Here are the files we discussed." Or is there another way to do it?18KViews8likes13CommentsCan no longer open powerpoint files
I tried to back up all my files last night and they seem to have vanished from my laptop and are now only on my dropbox. When I tried to download them back to my mac, all of my powerpoints now have a spaceship symbol next to them (word and excel documents still have the normal symbol next to them and open fine) and wont open. Dropbox says there is an error previewing them but gives me the option to download however when I download my laptop says there is no availible application to open the document with (depsite it being a ppt and I have ppt). I have no idea what to do as im new to dropbox and fear I may have lost 3 years of uni work.4.6KViews0likes11Commentssharing files and folders with non team members
Greetings to all, Using a business standard account, I would like to create different spaces to share files and folders with specific team members as well as non-members. Typically: Top-level ----> sharedspace1 (john, peter, mary, teammember1) ----> sharedspace2 (jane, peter, teammember1, teammember2) ----> sharedspace3 (peter, chris) When sharing a file (within a shared folder) with non-team members, each non-team member receives an (email) invitation and link to access said file Before the non-member can access the file, he is asked to merge it with his personal dropbox account 1/ Is there a way for non-team members to access shared files / folders without having to merge with their personal Dropbox? 2/ If they do merge with the personal Dropbox: a/ Are any subsequent edits to yhe file from others automatically synced? b/ How can we be sure that third parties do not have access to other files / folders of the personal Dropbox? When a non-team member creates and shares a file / folder (within the shared space), an email can be sent for accessing the file/folder but the file/folder is not created in a shared space; rather, it is created under the private space (purple) of the Team. It can not be seen by non-administrator in the hierarchy. Since a non-member is the owner of the file/folder, it cant be moved into a shared space - not even by the administrator. The error is 'The owner of this shared folder isn't a member of the Team.' 1/ Is there a way to force files / folders created by non-members to live in a specific directory (in a shared space)? Thanks!Solved7.9KViews1like6CommentsRenamed files won't open
Hello! So I've been reorganizing a shared folder by renaming all the files. For the first 30 mintues or so erverything was fine and I was able to view files that I had renamed. Then after I renamed one it showed a spaceship next to the name and all the other ones I had renamed showed the spaceship as well instead of the little preview. Now they won't open or download at all. I tried going back to an older version using version history but it didn't work. Please help! This is a shared folder with my boss and I have to fix it before she sees.Solved5.2KViews1like2CommentsCan't read .txt file with HTML Viewer on New phone
Since upgrading to my new phone, Moto G4 Plus running Android 6.0.1, I cannot open a .txt file from my Dropbox using the built in HTML Viewer. My previous phone was running Lollipop. https://www.dropbox.com/s/ezap5v0cos0wau8/Screenshot_20170212-090528.png?dl=0 I can open them with other apps from Dropbox including the Dropbox Text Editor or the App Docs, but for my purposes, the HTML viewer is perfect for my what I need. The Dropbox Text Editor double spaces everything and Docs converts it and then saves in Google Drive. I guess I can look for another app, but I would prefer not too.Solved10KViews0likes10Comments
