Missing "Available offline" icons

After I ran the December 2022 Windows 10 Version 21H2 updates, my green "Available Offline" icons disappeared in Windows Explorer for my local Dropbox drive. How can I get them back? They are invaluable for telling what files are synced with my online Dropbox.

Thanks.

  • BRILLIANT!

    Thanks, Walter, for this suggestion.

My problem is solved and I have my "Available offline" icons visible again.

    - I caused the problem when I installed the Adobe Creative Cloud and Adobe Bridge on December 26th.

    - In the Windows Registry, there were now too many Overlays for Dropbox to fit within the first 15.

    - I uninstalled OneDrive (which I dislike and never use), and rebooted my computer.

    - That activity removed OneDrive from the first 7 Overlay Positions and when I restarted explorer.exe, the Green icons were back in my Dropbox folders. The link to this post was VERY helpful in explaining the problem.

I love working with Tech Support people who know what they are doing, and can help less confident computer users like me successfully implement solutions. This issue can now be marked as Resolved.

    Thank you so much, Ailis

Hey Ailis, thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Can you let me know which version of Dropbox you're using and what's the sync status of the app?

You can see this info, by hovering over the Dropbox icon in your system tray.

Is the Dropbox app working otherwise? If you check your account online, do you see that your files have synced?

Keep me posted and we'll go from there.

      Hi Hannah,

Thank you for your quick response.

My desktop version of Dropbox is 163.4.5456.
The sync status of the app is "Up to date"

The Dropbox app is correctly working otherwise. I just checked my online account and all the files I uploaded recently are exactly in the folders they should be.

I have always wanted my Dropbox files on my HP Omen 880-160se to be "Available offline" and my default in the Dropbox app is set up that way. I have done NOTHING to change my settings.

Now when I right-click on one of the local Dropbox folders or files in Windows Explorer, the short-cut menu gives me the option to "Make online-only", so I can see the property is set correctly. It's just that the Green icon with the white check-mark is not visible on any file or folder when I'm connected to my online Dropbox account.

Interestingly, I have a Microsoft Surface Pro 7 tablet running the same Windows 10 Pro Version 21H2, which I ran the same December Windows updates on, with Dropbox Version 163.4.5456, and when I connect it to my same Dropbox account, the Green "Available offline" icons show up just fine on every folder and file.

So I conclude: (1) something is different in the software on the HP Omen than on the Surface Pro, and (2) maybe it is a coincidence that this problem happened after the Windows Updates, and something else is causing it. I don't do any gaming on either computer.

      Thanks again, Ailis

Hey Ailis, sorry to jump in here, but can you let us know if you're running any 3rd party apps that could be accessing your files like cloud or backup services or antivirus programs on your HP Omen computer?

If you are, please have a look at this post and let us know if any of the information there helps in your case.
