How could I get Dropbox Paper 2020?
How could I upgrade to Dropbox Paper 2020 from the older version?
Hello neosmile.
Thank you for your interest in Paper 2020 .
Currently, the Paper 2020 release is available to new users only. Our team is currently in the works of a new feature in order to build the best Paper experience for all our users. Old and new.
You will hear more about this feature and your Paper docs will live in the Dropbox filesystem, when the development is finalised. What I did -because I honestly couldn't wait- is this: I created a new Dropbox account and shared my old Paper docs to it.Notes:pushpin:- "Old" Paper docs shared with Paper 2020 release users will be available in their Dropbox home and will show in Recents.
- Paper 2020 release docs shared with Legacy users will be available on their Dropbox home, but not in Paper.

Dear Dropbox team.
I am using Dropbox Paper for the collaborative features which, I believe, it was designed to enable. As I invite people to a Dropbox folder, and I use Paper docs to organise information, I found that I cannot save my paper documents in the same folder, because the old version (which I have) does not allow it. This creates a lot of confusion.
Apparently, the 2020 release solves this problem: https://help.dropbox.com/files-folders/paper/paper-2020-faqs
But, strangely you have decided to roll this out to new users only. It would be extremely helpful if you could allow users to choose whether they want to upgrade (or downgrade) so everyone in the team could be on the same version.
Ideally, as a long time paying user, I'd like the option to upgrade to the 2020 release and be able to save related documents in a single Dropbox folder.
I hope this can happen very soon. Thanks for your help.

As it is February 2021, when can I expect to be upgraded to Paper 2020?

Now 2022, still no sight of Dropbox Paper 2020, and still getting the "the team is working hard to roll this out to all existing users" response from support. Looks like they have rescheduled the legacy API depreciation yet again, to Q2 2022. So, who knows at this point when us, long-time paying users, will see this new feature that new free accounts have had for 2 years... Almost as if they only care about new user growth over user retention -OR- they actually want all of us existing users to create new accounts to get a feature promised 2 years ago to artificially inflate their user account growth figures. I guess it's all about the stock price nowadays.
- AndrewKExplorer | Level 4Soo I just went to try Paper out & discovered even though it came out 2 years ago & I’ve been a paid user for quite a while I don’t have the latest version? Smells like abandonware to me.

This is the most stupid thing Dropbox could have done. I mean not upgrading everybody at the same time! Over 2 years of transition if absolutely unacceptable. Through all my frustration, I found a temporary workaround:
My partner is on the 2020 release and I'm not. First, my partner created a Paper document and put it into a project share folder. (No need to share it because it's already in a shared folder) Everybody can see the .paper document. (I couldn't create that file without the 2020 release) When I need a new document, I duplicate that file, move it to wherever I want, rename it and reformat it. That's how I can use Paper like a 2020 release without having it.
For the document that already exists, I had to copy-paste the content from the old to the new document.... for each one. I was lucky, I had just a few.
I hope this will help someone and calm some frustrations.
However, my deception toward Dropbox is unrepairable.

Given that Dropbox is not putting any heft behind the roll-out indicates that they are not serious about this product, which is a real pity. I use a lot of notes taking apps and this one is by far my favourite for collaborative editing. A key feature for me even considering it as a solution for our company was having a proper integration with the file system so that I have everything in one place as well as full control over the data by keeping a private copy on the user drive in an open format. Without this feature, I could as well use Apple Notes.

It's Q1 2023. Now the migration guide indicates the upgrade for legacy users is Q3 2023. Assuming the deadline is respected, it will have been 4 years since Paper 2020 was introduced for new users in 2019. Unfortunately, based on past experience, it's hard to believe that this deadline is meaningful.

Folks,
It seems like Dropbox has gone completely dark on when long term, loyal business users are going to get the 2020 upgrade.
Threads on this in the community look like they're not being monitored and the FAQs look like they're long out of date.
It's critical that we're able to store paper files in our dropbox home folder – if we want to use it. We've been holding out for this mythical release for over a year. At the moment the dropbox solution is to use Word. So now we're paying for two cloud storage solutions.
Can you please update.

I'd be really thankful for new information as well – just to have a time frame for the long expected update

It is April 2021. As a long term paid customer please resovle this ASAP so I can start using the Paper 2020. It's very confusing now when I share paper docs with others who's on new paper system.

Hello,
It's been over a year since response and the 2020 Dropbox Paper release has still not been rolled out to existing Dropbox users. Unfortunately, setting up a new Dropbox account isn't really practical for those of us who have large accounts and where Dropbox is deeply integrated into our existing workflow. Could we have an update as to whether this rollout is still going ahead? Thank you!
- MeganDropbox StaffHey all, I'm wishing you a wonderful Thursday!
After checking in with our team, it seems they're still working on fully rolling out the features for Paper 2020.
Your patience on this has been valuable, and much appreciated!
If you need anything give us a shout.

Hello @Fiona,
I am having the same issue. It is very disturbing to collaborate with others who are having the 2020 version. Is there any way I can opt in to upgrade now?
Thanks!

I'm working with some other people who started using Dropbox Paper after the switch to Paper 2020, but I started using it before that, so I'm still on old-Paper. I can edit Paper documents they've created, but I can't add new Paper documents next to theirs. How can I upgrade my account to Paper 2020 so I can collaborate with them? I'd be happy to export and re-import all of my documents in order to do so.

Thanks for reaching out to us here jyasskin!
I've just moved your post here, since you have a similar question to the OP here.
When you have the time, please take a look at Fiona's post here for some more info on this.
We are in the process of rolling this feature out to other users too over the coming months, but perhaps this will help if you want to start using this now.
Let me know if you have any questions!

We don't use Dropbox paper because it is not properly connected to Dropbox. It's illogical that you cannot use Paper for ideas generation then not file it in the relevant folder in Dropbox itself (i.e. if you're working on a project, have brainstorm session). Major draw back for us.

What you've described is the promise.

I'd be happy to set up a new account so I can get the "new" version of Paper, but I don't want to lose the extra ~4GB of free storage that I've accumulated. Is there any way I can create a new account and transfer my extra storage? I'd have no problem moving the files/notes over myself.

If past serves as a predictor of what to come, I think "next week" means something like "next year". Dropbox Paper 2020 was released in... 2020, and promises to upgrade legacy users were periodically made until now, late 2024.
I received the same email as you did, and for a while I believed something would change. I should have known better. - annatribeExplorer | Level 4
I was looking to move some of my teams organisational aspects and time-lining over to Dropbox Paper. I used Paper in it is early days and it was OK but lacked some basic functionality which would have made a good tool; but, I had heard that Paper had been upgraded and was interested to see if it would work for me. It sounded like it would as it now could store directly to dropbox folders (like Google Docs does) plus other new features. After several hours of research and faffing about, along with speaking with the help desk I discover that these new features are only available to new users. I am sorry but WHAT?
I have business account and since the new Paper was released in 2020 have given dropbox THOUSANDS of dollars in fees but for some reason Dropbox doesn't see it as a priority to look after those who pay them money. I can't see how this would even get past consumer affairs. To make matter more irksome I started this plan in 2020 so when it was released was even a pretty new customer. Dropbox says it is working through issues which meant paper didn't integrate with existing files; but they have been doing that for three years. If the program was that far off finished in 2020 why release it at all? The only cherry in the subscription models that we, as purchasers, are now forced to be a part of is that we receive the latest releases and no longer have to but the program outright every few years. That Dropbox are not playing their part in the deal beggars belief.
My new idea?? Look after your customers Dropbox. They might stay. Very interested to hear what the development team has to say about this.

I received a notice on Dec 2 that my Paper document will be updated to the 2020 release within the next week, but it has not been updated yet. When will it be updated?
