4 years agomy files disappeared.
I installed the dropbox on my MAC and it automatically uploaded some files.
However when I entered the dropbox, it is not there. it is an important file and I cannot miss it. Can someone help me? I already looked at the list of deleted files and there is nothing. I did it on Tuesday, the 26th, and on the 27th, I was no longer. I already did the backward process but the file just disappeared. I don't know what else to do! when i try to open the file in Word, it appears that it is in the dropbox in the following path: users / paulobarros / dropbox / mymac / desktop / filename but when I open the drop, there is nothing. HELP PLEASE!!!
- LusilDropbox StaffHello anonymous, let's see what we can find.
It looks like computer backup was enabled, which adds computer folders (like Documents, Downloads, and Desktop) to your Dropbox folder.
Has the desktop app finished syncing?
You can see that by hovering or clicking on the Dropbox icon that's on your menu bar.
If so, could you also have a look at your events page to see if there is a record of the file being added to your account?
Check it out and let me know of any updates, thanks!- anonymous
Hello,
Yes, the computer had finished syncing.
I can't find the archive anymore. It's not in my computer or dropbox!
- JayDropbox StaffHi anonymous, could you check your recycle bin on your machine to see if the files are there?
Can you locate any deleted files on your Dropbox account to recover the files?
- GaidannaNew member | Level 2
My important files disappeared. I don’t see any option to recover them. I didn't have backups as cloud means that you can have access to them everywhere. Unless someone deletes your valuable files. Is there any way to recover my files?
- HannahDropbox Staff
Hey Gaidanna, sorry to hear about your files missing.
Have you looked into your deleted files page and your events page, to see if you can locate and restore them?

I lost all me files since 2016. No one to speak to. Tried different browsers - did not help. Drop box charging me for more space for months but I have nothing!! Want to delete my account but wondering if there is any other place I should look before deleting. I'm not tech savvy. any suggestions?
- HannahDropbox Staff
Hey sramondelli21, sorry to hear about your missing files.
When was the last time you logged in to the account with the files and had access to them?
Are you currently logged in to the same account, or is it possible that you've logged in to a different account by mistake?
And can you check if you can find your files in your deleted files or events page?
- sramondelli21Explorer | Level 4I checked in July and august. It seems to have happened when my computer crashed but my drop box files should have been saved in my account. They are not in deleted files. There’s nothing anywhere. And I’m getting charged for additional storage for the files that are no longer there
- leighketchumNew member | Level 2
I have no idea why - I'm so confused as to how this could have happened. But all of my files - thousands of files; years of work have all vanished. Is there anyone in tech support that can look into this for me?
- HannahDropbox Staff
Hey leighketchum, sorry to hear about that.
If you've made sure you're logged in to the correct Dropbox account, can you check your deleted files page and your events page, to see if you can find any sign of the files?

Have you checked the Events page?
Failing that, you'll need to provide more information before we'll know how best to help you. Were the files in your account online? When did you last see them there, and when did you last use your account? Check your Plan page and let us know what plan it shows you on.

Dear Madams and Sirs,
in July 2023 I stored/loaded up a lot of important official data from my past work in my Dropbox account. It was all there, I had definitively seen it in July, working at the same computer I used today (doing the storage/upload on several days, closing and reopening Dropbox, it was all there). Now I wanted to use these data, but there is NOTHING of it in my Dropbox account!!! All possible help (looking for deleted/hidden documents, history of activities etc.) did not bring the least help - there is no data, "there was no activity in your account ..." (!) etc. Photos of years ago are still there, but all my new important data has disappeared completely without me doing anything. Therefore I kindly ask for your help. I don't understand why this happened.
It was the first time I had tried to trust Dropbox. That is what came out of that. I am sorry, I am deeply frustrated.
Thank you very much in advance
Best regards
Katrin

Hi Ka25
What is www.dropbox.com/events showing?
- Ka25Explorer | Level 4
Thank you very much for your answer.
=> Nothing. It tells me that there are no activities yet. As if I never would have done anything with Dropbox.

Hi, I had been using dropbox since 2015 when I decided to change career and retrain as a therapist. All of the files from my studies and work , with many audio recordings are gone.
I was on an old tariff and only realised a few days ago that there was a new layout and new tariff that is double the price I used to pay for so many years...
I want my files back. I logged in through a link Dropbox emailed me and now it's all gone. I should have used my usual logging details... I guess.
How can I get my files back ???

-------
Sorry to hear that your files are missing, lr5.
The first thing you'll need to figure out is if they're possibly inside a different Dropbox account.
Make sure to check all your email addresses, to see if you can find emails from Dropbox, so that you know if these addresses are associated with Dropbox accounts.
Also, did you create the Dropbox Business team account back in April? Or did you join someone else's team?

I went into Dropbox to retreive a file only to discover that every single file I had uploaded (pdf's) are GONE!
I went into my computer's history and found several old links to certain files on dropbox and when it brings me to the dropbox page, a message pops up saying file doesn't exist.
I don't know what happened but Im devestated that all my files are now gone!!- MarkSuper User II
What does www.dropbox.com/events show?
- KatHomespunExplorer | Level 3
only recent things I did the last hour.
- PatrickVBExplorer | Level 3
I am missing years of files, none of which I selected for deletion.
Is Dropbox arbitrarily deleting files without notice?
Is there a work around?
Good grief.
- HannahDropbox Staff
Hey PatrickVB, sorry to hear about this.
Dropbox won't delete your files, but here's a list of reasons why files might get deleted.
What does your deleted files page and your events page show?
- PatrickVBExplorer | Level 3
Hi Hannah,
Thank you for the very speedy response.
No one else has access to my files, and Dropbox is very good about alerting me to someone else signing onto my account—so something is literally amiss!
Many of my files are missing and unretrievable 30/180/365 days; I did not delete them, and from what I see on this forum and the (questionable) internet searches, others have experienced similar deletions.
Under what circumstances would Dropbox delete files, or is there a potential syncing issue from old to new devices?
Patrick
- APSNExplorer | Level 3
I have the same issue PatrickVB
- JayDropbox Staff
Hi APSN, if you're not seeing the missing files on the events page or deleted files page, then there's a few possibilities as to why this might be the case:
- The files are on another Dropbox account
- They were on a shared folder you don't have access to any more
- The files were deleted outside of the 30 day period
- The files were permanently deleted
Please could you check the above to try to locate the files.
