I can't access my backup files, after Dropbox asked for a backup update

Since clicking on the file backup link that Dropbox sent me today, Dropbox is not featuring any of the files that I have on my PC. I use my Dropbox account on my PC, my iphone and my ipad. This one account allows me to see all my PC files across all my devices. But since clicking on the backup link DB sent me, there are none of my PC files appearing in my Dropbox account either on the web portal, nor on my files area of my PC or on the app on my iphone and ipad. This means I cannot get access to any important files while away from my PC until I can restore them to Dropbox. Very urgent! I am lost without my files and cannot work! Really hoping some clever person can help me please!

Same issue here since I have clicked on the Backup link.  Just spent 30 minutes with tech support.  Bottom line, you can only access your backup through a web interface and it is no longer in the Files directory.  The only positive here, is that this is now a real back up, not just a sync.  But the list of negatives is much longer.  Not only you cannot easily use it when working away from your computer, it is removed from file directories both on mobile and computer.  The whole point of DB was to have all fill-in the same place.  To make matters worse, YOU CANNOT UNDO IT and go back to the old way!!!

One of the worst decisions I have seen!

    Hi,

this is connected to new BACKUP option which actually an aphasia.

When new Backup is enabled, your Desktop/Documents/Downloads folder from MAC are unable to sync.

My Family was using Dropbox Mobile app to access whatever they had on the computer, and now this option is gone.

This is something that is really needed and I need to find a solution.

If backup is backup, please enable those folders to sync - right now it is not possible. You need to create a separate folder on Dropbox to sync.

But this is not what it was before.

Please restore or enable this option!

I agree. It looks like our two options are a backup of local files, or a sync of files stored only on Dropbox. The old way allowed local storage with a backup online that acted as a sync, so it was both in one, and it looks like a lot of people were using this handy feature. If I move all my files to Dropbox for full sync and don't store them locally, why would I need a backup of my empty local drive? Or I could start copying and saving everything twice, once to sync and once to store, because I want it on local too. Now I am using the web interface of the backup to get files on my mobile which it is not really meant for. I don't think the upgrade message explained this well and I was annoyed that I couldn't get it off my screen and read it later to make a better decision. There seems to be no way out of this being a cumbersome and complicated experience that doubles a lot of workload and increases the potential for errors with its more demanding interface. I like Dropbox but this is a bit of a Flopbox.

Thanks for posting this on our forum, Lorraine66

If possible, can you send me a screenshot of the link Dropbox sent you regarding your backup? Was it a prompt to update Dropbox Backup to the latest version perhaps?

If yes, please note that with the updated Dropbox Backup feature, backups from other devices will only be accessible from the web.

However, since you mentioned you can’t even see your files on your web account, I’d like you to send me a screenshot of what appears here on your Backups page online.

    Ping me, when you’re ready.

Thank you Nancy. I have clicked on your link to the backup page and I can see the files there but they are not appearing on my dropbox when I go into it either on my PC nor on my iPhone or iPad. Is there a way to get them back? I don’t know what dropbox backup is and I wish I had never clicked on the link. I would rather just go back to my original dropbox and have all my files restored if possible please

Hey Lorraine66, you should be able able to locate your content locally on your PC, in their original paths.

And on your iPhone/iPad, the files should be visible when visiting your Backup page.

As for the Backup feature, you can disable it using these steps. Can you give it a go?

      The chatbot says:
'When you store your files to Dropbox, your files are synced across your devices and accessible in real time. With Dropbox Backup, your folders and files from your computer or external hard drives are automatically backed up to the cloud and you can quickly recover your content if something goes wrong.'
This means that I have inadvertently converted to DB backup. But I don't want that - I want my straight DB account back, where all my PC files automatically sync across all my devices in real time.
      ~How can I convert back?

I am really at my wits' end: I have gone through every Q&A I can think of. I currently pay monthly for my backup plan, but this has completely stopped working - none of my PC files are appearing in DB nor syncing across my devices. Should I perhaps cancel my DB account and start again with a new account? I cannot think of anything other way to get Drop Box back working properly?

I've had Dropbox set to keep a back up of the files on my PC for quite some time.  All of a sudden all but two of my folders (along with contents) are gone from my computer and only on dropbox.  I did not delete the files from my PC.  I seem to remember a Dropbox message in the past few weeks about a backup or something but I didn't pay close attention.  Does anyone know what might be going on?

Hi there, DarinJ2, thanks for reaching out to us.

If you chose to update your Dropbox app to the new Backup experience, your backup files shouldn't be removed from the computer completely; they should have just returned to their original locations.

Have you checked there, to see if you can find them?
