I chose to back up my Photos folder but the parent folder seems to be getting backed up too

Hello,

So I created a backup which seems to be working find except it also keeps backing up newly created files in the parent directory.

What I want to Backup:
F:\Photos

What it backs up:
F:\Photos
F:\

Any new files that are created in F:\ (after the creation date of my backup) are also being backed up.
It does not backup existing files in F:\, which it shouldn't. But it does backup newly created files in F:\, which it should't.

It should only backup F:\Photos. Which is the folder that I selected in my backup.

Any idea what's going on?

Thanks for bringing this to our attention, halp.

Would you mind sending us a screenshot of your backup settings in the Dropbox preferences, showing you only selected to back up the Photos folder?

Also, are you seeing the same folder being backed up, when you look at your backups online as well?

Let me know and we'll go from there.

      Hi,

Here you see I selected one folder (photos), this folder contains more folders with more photos.
It backs up that folder with subfolders succesfully.

Which looks like this on the external harddrive and in the screenshot below:

      F:\Photos\many subfolders

Sadly it also backs up newly added files in the parent directory:

F:\all newly created files or folders sinced the backup was created

And yes, I can see everything online. The selected folder with photos and the files in the parent directory that were created after the backup creation. Everything that was allready in the parent directory is not backed up, thankfully.

Hi halp, as you'r using selective sync, this would only apply for the folder currently on your drive.

Any new files in the root folder, or any new folders, would be selected in the selective sync by default, meaning they would be backed up by the system. You'll need to manually disable those folders to prevent them from syncing.

One way to work around this is to have any new folders or files be created in an already deselected folder.
