Why do you say I have no space when I do?

I am using 2.81 GB of 6.75 GB so why did dropbox send this email-

This is a friendly reminder that your Dropbox is almost full! Sadly, it won't save any new changes until it's back in shape. Upgrade your Dropbox today and get up to 3 TB (3,000 GB) of space and powerful sharing features.

  • And I'm back...

Yes, due to a technical issue the emails were incorrectly sent. There are 2 near-quota programs that should only email users +90% of quota, it seems since probably around yesterday, that its been running incorrectly and doubled the amount of used bytes... so users that are 40-50% of quota are appearing as 80-100% of quota.

We'll make the change and no further users should receive this email incorrectly after the weekend.

(I'll try and get it stopped and reconfigured sooner than that of-course, but I just give that timeframe as that's the latest I expect all the updates to take to apply.)

Many thanks for highlighting here and saving other users the pain!

I got the same email today! I have a Dropbox Plus account with 2TB storage. I have only used 3.2GB.

The email addresses me by name, so if this is in fact a scam of some kind as suggested below, there must have been a data breach. If there are a lot of these emails around; they must be:

    • alarmist errors,
    • security problem,
    • some kind of sneaky marketing.

I didn't click the link -- I went straight to my account...

Please can Dropbox investigate properly? Cancelling notification emails is NOT a solution -- as has been pointed out, we would then get no warning of a genuine lack of space.

I have the same email. I am...

"Using 1.07 GB of 2.25 GB"

      Something is wrong.

I got the same email. I'm using only 6.25GB of 12.98GB in my free acount, i.e., less than half the available space, and I haven't added or removed any large files recently. I have only one Dropbox account, and this message was sent to the email associated with that account.

It doesn't seem to be a phishing scam - the link in the email doesn't send me to a dodgy 3rd-party website, but to a page on the official Dropbox website which says: "You’re almost out of room! Adding another file could fill up your account. Make sure you’ll be able to sync or use your files when you need them." With a button saying "Upgrade now".

But it *does* have the appearance of a scam, in that it is giving me false information (that my Dropbox is nearly full) and using fake scare tactics (that no changes will be saved until I upgrade) to trick me into upgrading to a paid account that I have no need for.

Benefit-of-the-doubt would suggest that this is more likely a mistake than a deliberate scam on Dropbox's part, but it is something that needs looking into as a matter of urgency if these false emails are still going out. I hope you will also be sending a correction and apology to anyone who has already erroneously received one.

Why am I getting a Dropbox almost full email?  It even says it won't save any new changes.  Is this spam?  I am using less than half of my Dropbox space.

Hey there Bob S.15, thanks for reaching out to us with this!

Just as a side note, I've merged your post here as it pertains to the issue described here and so I can point you to the accepted solution here. It seems we had a technical issue and Ross has explained this in a bit more detail.

Sorry for any confusion caused by this and let me know if you have any other questions.

      Thanks!

Same here, I'm only using 45% of my space but I got that same email.  I assume this is Dropbox's latest push to get rid of non-business users.  If so, I'm more than willing to leave.  I have been thinking about dumping dropbox because I already have space on Onedrive and Amazon Drive for less money.

    Hi,

Yesterday I get a message saying

"Your Dropbox is almost full: 5% of storage space available"

"This is a friendly reminder that your Dropbox is almost full! Sadly, it won't save any new changes until it's back in shape. Upgrade your Dropbox today and get up to 3 TB (3,000 GB) of space and powerful sharing features."

But on my personal account Plan page (https://www.dropbox.com/account/plan), it shows the following:

Personal Dropbox space:  Using 2.51 GB of 5.25 GB

Regular files (1.68 GB)  Shared files (847.15 MB)  Unused space (2.74 GB)

Is something wrong with the Accounts ability to count?

      Hi all,

An internal system error automatically triggered the sending of these emails to some users incorrectly.

It was initially reported to us on another thread here. You also can check out the solution posted there if you want some more info.

Really sorry for any confusion it might have caused.

I had the same message, with my account saying I am using 1.977 out of 5.88 available.

It looks like 1.977 is very close to 2 ... so it looks like Dropbox is ignoring the (3.88GB more) 'earned' extra space promised by Dropbox.

I wonder if an explanation and/or apology from Dropbox would be welcome?

I’m getting the same. I’ve got over 13gb. With only 80% used. Todays sensationalist lie says it’s about to stop syncing unless I act. Why are they not being honest. This makes me less likely to use them as long term paid solution. I’m more likely to go with another provider as Dropbox are liars.

      Hi,

It looks like this bug has resurfaced.   (using base level  instead of base+extra for comparison to limits).
i received an email, and on investigation several prompts on the web-site.

Please let me know if this is a planned lowering of the basic limit (and not grandfathering legacy users); and/or expiration of the extra space.

All and all am very happy with dropbox, and as a former s/w engineer know that stuff happens, and that getting fixes through the pipeline/ bureaucracy can take time.

see image below, 2 different quota's shown (i highlighted in yellow, and redacted my email)

Hi gtb! Thanks for posting here.

The actual quota that’s available for your Dropbox account is 5.75GB, as shown when clicking on your avatar (you can also see this here).

The page that you’re currently looking at is just showing the minimum quota for Dropbox Basic, which is indeed 2GB.

        Hope that clarifies things.

Hi there, I know this is an older thread, but I am having the exact same problem. The wording of the email I got is the same as well: "This is a friendly reminder that your Dropbox is almost full! Sadly, it won't save any new changes until it's back in shape."

I checked my free Dropbox space online and via the app: online it says I have 32.42 GB free, in the app (Mac) it says I have  48% of 62.4 GB free. Either way, I have PLENTY of space left...  and yes, the email address is the one I personally use for my Dropbox Account.

Can I safely ignore this email?

    Thanks & cheers

Just got the same email, but I am only using 2.5gb of 5gb and it's an old account I don't use anymore. I logged into it and verified no rogue files added, so not hacked.

      I'm guessing a glitch.

      Happy Friday Fullbore groovekonna!

This usually happens when users have two different emails/accounts and one gets full, but they access the other one on the web and get confused, as the other account they are seeing is not full.

I am not saying this is the case here. I am only saying that this is common for cases I have handled in the past. person shruggingYou can help me check what is going on there. Please confirm that the email address you received this notification email at, is the same email you have with the account you are checking the space of.

      Thank you!

I just got an email saying ⚠️ Your Dropbox needs more space!

`This is a friendly reminder that your Dropbox is almost full! Sadly, it won't save any new changes until it's back in shape. Upgrade your Dropbox today and get up to 3 TB (3,000 GB) of space and powerful sharing features.`

Yet my account shows I have only used 44.1% of 5.5Gb used....Whats going on?

Is Dropbox trying to scam me into upgrading?

The previous message states: "I've merged your post into this thread. This is already resolved. Refer to Ross' response above.

        https://www.dropboxforum.com/t5/Accounts-billing/Lying-email-Why-do-you-say-I-have-no-space-when-I-d..."

Unfortunately, that's not true! The real problem is that Dropbox deliberately provides false information to its users with an intention which is easy to guess: to scare users and to provoke them to make the wrong financial decisions (in many countries this is a crime!).
The error in the software led to a situation where many people got aware of that fact and reacted with the complaints. However, responses from Dropbox representatives here suggest that they don't see anything unethical with such procedure and that users with less than 20% of free space will still receive a false warning about the risk of... no, the certainty of loss of their data attempted to store in Dropbox. That shold change. The way to make the message clear and true was suggested in one of posts of the thread.

I'm having the same issue. My account says "Using 1.3 GB of 2 GB" but I received an email, subject "Pretty urgent: Your Dropbox is full and no longer syncing". I don't sync and my storage is by no means full.

It does seem like a marketing thing - can it be stopped please?

Two days ago I started getting messages about running out of storage space. I have the free version of 2GB of space but have earned additional space by referring friends. (9.75GB)

Online dropbox shows that I am using 10.1 GB of space yet using explorer, I see that I'm only using 2.2GB of space. Almost everything in the folders is small jpgs and Doc files which really don't take up a lot of space. I have several shared folders but empty them as soon as someone shares something with me. To try and resolve the issue I have tried:

    - Finding and deleting large files but there arn't any that I can see
    - Using the bot. I keep getting "Increase your storage options"
    - Clearing the cache

There is a large discrepancy between the 10.1 GB of space dropbox says I' using and the 2.2 GB I show.

    Any advice???

    Thnks.........

Well, I was able to answer my own question.

Someone had uploaded a large HIDDEN file (7GB) unknowingly to a  "shared folders". I was finally able to see the size of her usage.

After I deleted all the files including the one I never saw, the space freed up.........

      Tnx to all.............
