Logic Pro X projects stored in Dropbox don't show up in "Recent"
Hi all, this is a niche issue and probably not Dropbox's "fault", but thought I'd ask here just in case.
Since I upgraded to the latest version of Dropbox for Mac (which moved the folder location, etc.), Logic Pro X projects stored in Dropbox no longer show up in File > Open Recent or in the Recent tab of Logic's startup window.
The same thing was already happening with Google Drive for Desktop, so I would guess it's a general issue with the File Provider API. However, projects stored in iCloud Drive do show up in Recent.
Other Apple apps (TextEdit, Pages) will show files from Dropbox in the Open Recent menu. (And Dropbox-stored Logic projects do show up in Recent Items under the top-left Apple menu.)
Making the folders available offline doesn't help.
Running Logic 10.7.6 in Ventura 13.1 on an M1 MacBook Pro.
Any ideas?
Hallelujah! It's fixed in Logic 10.8!

Finally! It only took like...2 years. First step, Apple: ADMIT YOU HAVE A PROBLEM....

Oef the update is only available for newer iOS users... I'm not ready to update from 13.0. Still having issues with Plugin Alliance and such

Good to hear. What OSX version are you using?
- misterjackpotsHelpful | Level 6
Sonoma 14.1

I've had the same problem ever since moving to a Mac Studio with Monterey. I've trashed Preferences and all the library files, I've done a complete re-install...no joy.
The Recents/file history work just fine for local files, and even files on external drives. But not DropBox files...even if they're Offline-Available.- WalterDropbox Staff
Hey F Stuart L., sorry to jump in here, but if you're still having issues with this, may we reach out via email to investigate further?

I'm not F Stuart L. but I am the OP…and am still having the issue and would be happy to discuss over email.

I have this problem as well. Very annoying, I use recent items exclusively when opening Logic

Any news?

I'm having this same issue with Logic not recalling recent items. I save my Logic files in Dropbox so as to have a nice backup so i'd like to leave them there... Did anyone figure a simple fix yet? If not i'll just swap over to Apple folder i guess...

Y'all,
After pulling what's left of my hair out here's the solution. When you save a Logic file it needs to be saved as a Folder, not a Package. Go to save as and you'll see the choices. Then replace your song/project on DropBox and your shared people will be able to fire up the Logic file.

Hi Neil J , and welcome to the Community! I’m Theresa, one of the Community managers here at Dropbox. It's great to see you’ve found a solution for storing your Logic Pro X projects. Just to let you know, we have a dedicated Musicians Group where Dropbox users like you, if you'd have any interest?

Nancy Jay Unfortunately this is not a solution at all. I have just purchased a new(secondhand MAC Book Pro M1), and it is running Sonoma..... I have one of the last Macbook Intels running Ventura...clean install of dropbox on my new laptop, I can see everything except Logic Project files created on Logic 11.
This means all my projects I have saved to drop box in the last 6 months are not able to be accessed directly out of the dropbox app on my new laptop.
Any suggestions as to a good alternative here.

Hi misterjackpots, thanks for posting here!
Have you perhaps tried to re-connect Dropbox with Logic Pro X? Since the local Dropbox folder was moved after the Mac update, this step may fix the issue.
Let me know if this helps.
- misterjackpotsHelpful | Level 6
Hi Nancy, I don't recall ever having to connect Logic to Dropbox before; I just open project files from Dropbox as I would from any other folder. What does re-connecting mean in this case?
Thanks!

Hi misterjackpots, most likely it could be related to the recent changes to the Mac OS version of the Dropbox desktop application.
As it appears to be related to Logic Pro itself not detecting the recent file, it might be worth contacting them for support on this matter.

No solution? I have no problem using Logic projects between two of mine Macs (Imac and macbook pro) but once I share folder with someone the logic project file is inaccessible. What an odd issue.. Please help. Could be that I'm running NTFS for mac on my machines that it's working maybe?

I have been told that due to Apples new rules, Dropbox must now make everything switch to online only and this is just the future we have to accept, but this is causing problems when working with large video files and audio projects. Re-downloading large video files all the time, and with Logic Pro I can no longer see my recents when I open projects from my dropbox. I keep everything important on dropbox so this is an issue for me.
I am having to check every time I open a project that files are not online only. For example, when a file file is created or added to an existing Logic project that I have switched to offline, it will make the new files online only and cause issues.
The attached screenshot shows what happens when I open a project with multiple files and that have switch to online only without asking me - or at least that is what I assume is the issue. Whenever this happens I just have to hard shutdown my Mac.
I decided to re-download Sync to compare and see if it has the same issue, and it does not. Sync does not make things online only unless you tell it to nor does it have to be saved in a particular place on my Mac.So my question is, why does Dropbox have to do this but Sync doesn't?
And has anyone had any joy with getting this update to flow well with their work projects? Currently I am thinking about switching away.- MeganDropbox Staff
Hi all, happy Friday!
The latest iterations of MacOS include some significant changes for services like Dropbox when it comes to how our application is allowed to operate on your Mac.
This article goes into more details about these changes and what it means for Dropbox users with MacOS.
As mentioned in that article, certain package files, like those associated with the Photos, Logic Pro, and Final Cut Pro apps are no longer allowed to be stored in locations that sync over cloud-storage services, Dropbox included.
We would love to be able to provide support for syncing these types of files through Dropbox, but in this case these limitations are out of our control directly.
I hope this helps!

Hi Megan!
Thank you for your answer. Just to let you know, although it is not supposed to sync Logic Pro and others' packages, Dropbox does it! If Logic Pro doesn't remember the last project opened if it's located in a Dropbox folder is another thing – it is my case!
So the "no sync" condition is not as bad as it seems.
Thank you very much!

Hi doppyjoe. I am using the dropbox app on mac and I have no problem with that (at least that I know). If I have certain logic files I am working with inside the same folder tree I just choose that tree to be offline too, so whenever I add any file it always is offline no matter if dropbox syncs it. I am working on Monterey, not Ventura, so I do not know if it applies, but in my case, I installed-reinstalled Dropbox. Other times I choose online only and then offline and it resets the thing.

I'm also seeing this... so weird!
Ever since updating to the new dropbox, the projects in dropbox to not appear under recents in logic.
I've also seen that Final Cut Pro libraries do not open directly from dropbox anymore...
So far this "update" has been more headaches than anything else.- F Stuart L.Helpful | Level 6
This has been going on for many months. It started when I moved to Monterey on a new Mac Studio – so I think it has little to do with Logic itself. More likely a problem with Dropbox's support of Silicon (which has been a Beta for well over a year now...and continues to produce many erratic behaviors in MacOS file operations).

Yes same problem here, in our studio we use dropbox teams but we don't see our latest projects appear in Logic's recent lists. Was fine before update to the latest Dropbox. Syncing across team members no issue. Hope this gets prioritised and fixed soon as we are all constantly swapping between projects. I'm on an intel MP 2019 btw.

Same problem here since I updated to the newest dropbox... Very annoying. Please fix!

Same problem here, and it's annoying

Read that Google Drive has the same issue. So its an Apple thing I'm afraid. iCloud doesn't has this issue and it looks like OneDrive isn't stored in the same library so thats an option too. I'm switching to iCloud.

Here are a few suggestions to try and resolve the problem:
Update Logic Pro X: Ensure that you have the latest version of Logic Pro X installed on your system. Software updates often include bug fixes and improvements that may address compatibility issues.
Check Dropbox Settings: Verify that Dropbox is set up correctly on your Mac and that the folder location has been properly configured. You can refer to Dropbox's documentation or support resources to ensure you've completed the necessary steps.
Reinstall Dropbox: If the issue persists, you may want to try reinstalling Dropbox. Uninstall the current version from your Mac, restart your computer, and then download and install the latest version from the official Dropbox website.
Contact Logic Pro X Support: Reach out to Logic Pro X support or consult their community forums to see if other users have encountered a similar issue. They may have specific insights or workarounds for using Logic Pro X projects with cloud storage services.
Consider Alternative Cloud Storage: If the problem persists, you might consider using an alternative cloud storage solution like iCloud Drive or another provider to see if the issue persists. As you mentioned, Logic Pro X projects stored in iCloud Drive show up in the "Recent" section, so it may be worth exploring this option.
Remember to back up your Logic Pro X projects before attempting any troubleshooting steps to prevent any potential data loss.
Overall, addressing this issue may require a combination of troubleshooting steps and potentially waiting for software updates from either Logic Pro X or Dropbox.
