I did get another response from support, but it's as before: no explanation, just the recommendation to reinstall Dropbox
This is completely intransparent. I'm not sure if I should trust my data to Dropbox any longer.

The issue was never resolved. So, after being a customer since 2008, I finally pulled the plug. There doesn't seem to be any development of the Dropbox core functionality anymore. (still no ARM support, despites people begging for it since years, and only support for Ext4)
I switched to syncing my data with Syncthing, which I have been testing thoroughly over the past ten months. This is not a cheaper solution, as I have to pay rent for my server, but it is more robust and transparent, and it is compatible with many more platforms than Dropbox.
I am doing some final cleanup steps using Dropbox's web interface, and there is an issue again. This just reaffirms my decision.
