Decryption fails running iOS 14.2
Just updated iPhone and iPad to iOS 14.2. Now, trying to open an encrypted file, it tell me "Decryption Failed. Null" If I open with Excel, it works fine. Anyone else having this issue?

I also have success opening an encrypted file within Dropbox after updated 14.4 IOS update. Thanks for everyone's help and input.

Still no solution Daphne. Various reasons offered, and various work arounds - but the core issue is Dropbox failing to keep up with the Apple updates and deal with this. There are a lot of threads on this. Trying to start a ticket shows me all the unresolved threads that have been closed with unsatisfactory "solutions' - and most 'sulitions' are different! One Super User says Dropbox doesn't support decryption. The problem is that it USED to and now it doesn't. It's obviously been a problem for a few months and the best Dropbox can suggest is "not our problem, talk to Apple, or Microsoft, or anybody". Really?

I don't know why you and others think this is a Dropbox issue and are blaming Dropbox. I read this often despite the number of posts here and on the Apple and Microsoft Forums explaining that the issue is caused by a change in how Apple is handling these password protected files.
JohnK2 is correct, this was caused by Apple and will only be fixed by Apple - that is "if" they decide to revert back to their formal handling of these type of files.
Go find a work around solution that you like, there are a few mentioned on this Forum. I say one that you like because I am not convinced this was an oversight by Apple and therefore your personal work around solution may become your new way of opening these password protected files.
We all hate change that we perceive as a step backwards but unless we sit in the Apple Engineering/Design center, we may not fully understand the rationale behind them. I too hope this was a mistake but to be honest, I rather like my work around for the reasons I have already posted on this site. It is now my go to solution and I don't even find myself trying it the old way due to the new way having more benefits.
So Kev19 and others, get on board and move forward, its 2021 and we all want to leave 2020 behind us :grimacing:
- Nealwald4 years agoHelpful | Level 7Happy New Year Martz and all. This is simply not a Dropbox issue and to be angry with them has no purpose. Apple changes the way the handle encrypted files. It is impacting almost all 3rd party apps trying to open encrypted files. Martz is correct either Apple will fix this because it was a bug in dev or it is now intentional behavior. Either way Apple has to solve this if the choose. The workarounds work and may be more secure so I would move on from compiling to Dropbox. Take your message to Apple.

So, can someone else try this to confirm please.... from Word or excel... save a copy of the file that won't decrypt to Dropbox.... now see if that file opens in Dropbox view..... mine did.

Unfortunately, I created the file in Dropbox, so there's not a copy in Excel for me to open, unless I'm missing something. If so, please let me know.

Hi all,
I did a little investigating and here is my UX.
First of all, until recently, my process was like this:
1) I'd open the Boxcryptor app on my iPhone
2) I'd launch a Boxcryptor-encyrpted Excel file (which also happens to have password-to-open protection)
3) Excel would ask me for a password, and I'd enter it
4) My file would open (in read-only) and I could navigate around.
After the iOS update, the above process fails because, as everyone has indicated, the app renders a "Decryption failed. (null)" error in Step 4 (after I enter the password).
As a workaround, and perhaps it's a better process anyway, I don't launch the Boxcryptor app at all now. As long as it's installed, I just launch the Excel app.
But of course like on my computer I find my encrypted app in the Boxcryptor folder not directly in the Dropbox folder. (If you see ".bc" in the file name you can't open it unless you go through the Boxcryptor folder. This of course is by design.)
Within the Excel app, once I find my encrypted file in the Boxcryptor folder and launch it, it asks me for my password and then it opens up no problem. And it's actually better this way, because I can edit the file with the Excel app, and it has much stronger navigation features. (I'm not sure if I was always able to do that in the past, but I haven't checked in years. This issue has forced me to change to a better habit.)
So for MY experience, I just need to stop launching the Boxcryptor app - just leave it installed on my iPhone. To open my MS Office files I will use an MS Office app instead, and go in through the Boxcryptor folder. All is well.

I suggest its nothing to do with dropbox. I have the same problem opening a password protected file from my email. Its only been aproblem since I updateded my iphone to 14.2. Detatching the file from email/dropbox etc and then opening it using excel of the iphone works fine.

Daphne, your response is not helpful. If you have read the thread here, you can see that this is not about updating DropBox or MS. It is about a compatability issues that is tied to iOS 14.2. It also is not helpful to tell us to set up a ticket with Support because the Basic plan (which we have to pay for) does not allow us to set up a support ticket. It only permits chat and email support. Please, Daphne, get back to us on this thread about whether there can be a fix for this. To tell us each to handle this individually is a cop-out and of no help to those of us with the Basic Plan. It is not an individual issue but a compatability issue between DropBox and the most recent iOS update from Apple.
