View, download, and export
Need support with viewing, downloading, and exporting files and folders from your Dropbox account? Find help from the Dropbox Community.
I have been using Dropbox on my old computer for >5 years. A few weeks before transferring to my new computer, I noticed that my files on my computer were no longer syncing with Dropbox.
To transfer to the new computer, I deleted everything on Dropbox, because it was not up to date, and uploaded everything form my old computer Dropbox folder. I did this folder by folder. So far, so good.
I then allowed Dropbox to download everything, 116 GB and >38,000 files, to my D(data) drive. Unfortunately, I cannot open any of these downloaded files. If I try to open a word doc, I get
And similar if I try to open other types of files.
The files on Dropbox are uncorrupted. If I download a word doc from dropbox, it opens correctly.
Can anyone help please. I would like to be able to open files on my computer.
If allowing to download folder by folder will help, I will need some instructions please.
Thanks.
Hello Megan,
All my files have a grey and white cloud - I know what that means!
Is it possible to make selected folders available offline?
Thanks,
Ruth
Hi @RuthP, the grey and white cloud icons mean that the file/folder you're looking at is online-only.
You can see more about that here.
And yes, you can choose the content you want, and then right click it, and select how you want to sync it: either available offline, or online-only.

Hello Megan,
This morning everything was synched except for two very big folders. That was just going to be a time job.
Now tonight, I am back where I started at the beginning of this thread!
I run two anti virus programs - Bitdefender and Malwarebytes. Bitdefender was causing a hassle and I white listed Dropbox, so I could proceed.
I have no idea if Malwarebytes is causing the next hassle, but from googling, it is possible.
Any ideas please?
Thanks,
Ruth
In that case, you can temporarily disable both of your antivirus programs and try again @RuthP

Thanks Walter. I have just white listed dropbox on Malwarebytes and everything is the process of synching and I finally have the dropbox app icon in the tray!
Hopefully, this is the end of my troubles!
Ruth
Glad to hear it's sorted now @RuthP
