dropbox using too much local memory (14G)

Dropbox is using 14G of storage on my Mac which seems to defeat the purpose of Dropbox - can't spare 14G.  Shortcut in Finder causing the problem I believe

Dropbox stores your files in the local Dropbox folder on your computer. It's main purpose is to sync those files to your account online. It's not a cloud-based folder where the files only exist online and you access them directly in the cloud. In order to access a file it needs to be on your local drive.

If you want to save local drive space you can mark files as Online-only or use Selective Sync to remove complete folders from your local drive.

Thank you Rich - was having trouble locating settings but I will try clicking on the links you provided and see if it gives me a clearer step by step roadmap to resolving.
