The thing is that for you to get this error message, you've probably been invited to a Dropbox Business team or perhaps you're a member of a free team.
Was your account in a Business team that was downgraded?
Can you try the steps to leave a free team from this article and let me know if they helped?

The only team I'm part of is a free team I created prior to February 2018.
From reading the link you gave me, if I leave this team the only way I can recreate it is by upgrade to business?
It doesn't make sense for me to do that, since it's just a team my wife and I use to share files with each other.
Is there any other way to change my email address aside from leaving that team?
