Ignoring specific folder not possible
I want to ignore a specific folder from syncing. So I read through help.dropbox.com/installs/dropbox-for-macos-support . Frist I tried the GUI approach: but on right-clicking the folder no "Do not sync" menu entry shows up (only "Copy link", "Share..", "Transfer a Copy...", etc). Also I tool to the Terminal approach: I typed xattr -d com.dropbox.ignored ~/Dropbox/path/to/my/folder but I get "No such xattr: com.dropbox.ignored". I certainly have Dropbox installed and it's syncing stuff properly. What can i do to ignore that folder? Many thanks for your help in advance. Best, Wal
Sync results under "Your Activity" show's yesterday's synced files not today's.
I can see syncing occurring with the dropbox notification icon on the Mac. When I look, syncing runs. When it completes, instead of showing what was just synced, it only shows files synced the previous day under the Yesterday heading. Those synced today or moments ago ought to show up under the Today heading, but nothing ever shows there. To be clear, the recently synced files do not show up under Yesterday, either. This seems like a bug. Because dropbox sometimes takes time to get around to syncing on the desktop, I need to be able to check if it recently synced any files. This behavior of never displaying recently synced files in the Your Activity list is disappointing. The image was captured mid-day, less than 10 minutes after syncing a dozen files. Note that Yesterday heading shows files underneath. The Today heading shows none of the files just synced.
Setting folders to Online-Only has left countless orphaned files on Mac OS
I have a folder in Dropbox called "~ ~ 0 DropBox Only." For ease of reference, I'm just going to call it "Dropbox Only." It contains many many folders that I intended to make online-only, having started with all Dropbox folders being synced normally. I had assumed that the local hard-drive based files would disappear. What I did not realize is that the folder structures and file names were not removed. It took me quite some time to realize this. As a result, I saved a number of files into folders in the Dropbox Only folder. In Finder, what I see is that files in the Dropbox Only folder (which could be several layers down in the folder structure) have either a cloud with a down arrow, a cloud with an exclamation point, or just a cloud. If a file in Dropbox Only is "orphaned," has a cloud with down arrow, and I try to open it, I get "Couldn't communicate with a helper application. Try your operation again. If that fails, quit and relaunch the application and try again." If it has a cloud with an exclamation, then I get "The document "xxxx" could not be opened. Try your operation again. If that fails, quit and relaunch the application and try again." If I try to open the "orphaned" file from within an application, the application often hangs or has other issues. Files and Folders added since the shift to online only-behave normally. I likely have thousands of "orphaned" files. I would happily just delete the folders, but at this point, I have many important files that have been added to some of these folders which I cannot afford to lose. If I could visually identify the "orphaned" files by their cloud status, that would help, but an "orphaned" file and a regular file that is not currently synced both show a cloud with a downward arrow. I'm tempted to change the status of the Dropbox Only folder to normal syncing, but (1) I don't know what will happen to files added since the syncing change and (2) I doubt I have enough disk space to hold the full contents of Dropbox Only. I am just looking for general guidance that allows me to either remove large numbers of "orphaned" files or restore them to normal syncing. Also, if I do successfully restore a sub-folder to normal syncing and then want to move it back to online-only, do I need to go through and delete all the affected file and folder entries on my hard drive? Presumably, the hard-drive versions are all "orphaned" at this point? With certain critical folders, I have renamed folder xxxx to xxxx_B on the hard drive. I then download the Dropbox version of xxxx. I find that xxxx and xxxx-B do not have all the same file and sub-folder names, so I have to painfully go through and check them against each other. This solution will not scale up to cover the thousands of files and folders. For now, I just use the xxxx folder, and if I am missing something, I look for it in the xxxx_B folder and move it to the xxxx folder. This is all a horrible mess, and I am just trying to find a way forward. Any help or thoughts are appreciated. macOS Sequoia 15.3.2
The ignore folder command isn't working; the folder is not being ignored.
I'm trying to ignore a node_modules folder using the command posted here: https://help.dropbox.com/sync/ignored-files My command as typed in Windows power shell is below: Set-Content -Path 'C:\Users\mroch\Dropbox\sd\node_modules' -Stream com.dropbox.ignored -Value 1 I do not see a gray 'minus' sign next to my node_modules folder in Windows Explorer and the files inside continue to by synced.Why was the way screenshots were handled changed?
Me and my friends question what drove the people behind this software to break something intentionally like that? I work as a Quality Assurance expert, and can only see this change as sabotage. When I press "PrtSc" I want the image to be copied into my clipboard. The fact that it was saved into the screenshots folder wasn't always desired, but I could deal with it (always cleaned up that folder once a month). But now that doesn't happen. I get so many extra steps, and if I opt out of it, I'm left with nothing. Sure, I could just install a different software for making screenshots, but that seems so stupid to do, given what worked before!There's a .canary file causing syncing issues on my Dropbox app.
Hey all! My local backup software failed out yesterday - it reported that there was a file in use in Dropbox. I poked around and found that ".canary" in my Dropbox cache was marked with the syncing icon (round blue arrows). There was also a file "canary.enabled", but that one seemed to be static. When I delete the ".canary" file, it simply reappears. This file doesn't show up on my online account (natch). I can see it on my two linked computers, my desktop (Win 11) and laptop (Win 10). Both are running app version 214.3.5104. I have a basic (free) account. Anyone know what's going on with this canary file? Why can't I delete it? Where did it come from? I'd like to clear it so my local backup will run, but I'm also concerned that this might indicate a security issue, as I have no idea where this file came from. Thanks for anything you can offer!
My Mac is stuck at "Syncing" after updating my OS.
Dropbox icon is saying "Syncing . . . " forever. I upgraded macOS to the latest version (15.3.1) and restarted the machine. (I don't know how to update Dropbox .) "View sync issues" says "You don't have any sync issues." How can one diagnose what's going wrong?
