I changed my Dropbox location but now Dropbox is not syncing

My Mac does not have enough space for all the files I use for work so I bought a 2T external hard drive to use as my “computer memory”. I have changed my Dropbox location to put all the files there, but now it’s not syncing with Dropbox. Everything that I have done is on the hard drive but not actually on Dropbox. How do I fix this issue?

Hi there, @PressandStandard, thanks for joining our Community.

Can you let me know which steps you followed to change the location of your Dropbox folder?

Did you use these steps or did you move it manually?

And are you getting some kind of error message now?

Let me know and we'll go from there.

Hannah,

I have a LaCie 2T external hard drive that I'm using. I went to my little dropbox icon at the upper right of my Mac computer, selected preferences, then went to sync. Scrolled down to Dropbox folder location. Clicked Change Location then selected my LaCie external hard drive. Told it what to sync and it did it's thing. I have been using that all week and when I went to look at something from my cell phone dropbox it was not there. (everything I did this week was not synced to my dropbox online). I want the hard drive because my computer does not have enough memory for what I'm doing. I just got this computer directly from Apple last November. It was the highest memory I could get.

If I'm not able to use the external hard drive like I would my computer memory then I will need figure something else out.

Please help!

Thanks for the additional info, @PressandStandard.

What's the current sync status of the Dropbox app?

You can see that along with the app version, by hovering over the Dropbox icon in your menu bar.
