How can I move my hard drive to a new PC and have Dropbox detect it?

How can I move my hard drive to a new PC and have Dropbox detect it?

Hello,

On PC1 I have my (D) DRIVE files backed up using dropbox.

I have dismantled and sold PC1.  I kept (D) DRIVE.

On PC2 I installed my (D) DRIVE and I want dropbox to recognize those files and resume backing up and syncing to the files in the dropbox cloud just like on PC1.

The files on (D) DRIVE have not changed.  (D) DRIVE has just been physically moved to PC2.

On PC2 - every time I install dropbox, it makes a folder on (C) DRIVE and starts syncing.

I want to stop syncing those files and have it look at the files on (D) DRIVE.

How do I do this?

Thanks,

Dave

Do you mean that you're using the Backup feature to back up an external drive to your Dropbox account (which would be visible on this page), or do you mean that you had Dropbox installed and your Dropbox folder (where your synced data lives) was on your D drive?

If your local Dropbox folder was on your D drive and that drive is no in the new computer, you should be able to point Dropbox to it so you can resume syncing the same files. During the installation of the Dropbox application there's an Advanced Options link that you can click on to specify the location of your Dropbox folder. If I remember correctly, this appears after you sign in during the install. Use that option and select the folder ABOVE your Dropbox folder. The installer should recognize that there's an existing Dropbox folder there and ask if you want to use it.

Note that if you directly select the Dropbox folder during the installation, you'll end up creating a new Dropbox folder inside your existing Dropbox folder. Make sure you select the folder above it, or the root of the drive if there are no other folders.
