I can't verify my current email address, so I can't update it to a new one.
I've been unable to verify the primary email address used for my account due to the fact that as I'm getting closer to retirement I did not renew the domain name used for that email address - [removed]. I've set up a gmail account address [removed] that I'd like to use as the primary email for my dropbox acct. Is there any other way to verify so I can make this change? I'd owned the domain for over two decades and have used dropbox for close to the same length of time and have been very satisfied until I've hit this wall.

Have you tried contacting support at www.dropbox.com/support ?
However, as the whole verification of email requires access to said email it may not be possible.
