Hi there TonyMac - sorry to jump in here and thanks for the feedback on this.
I just wanted to mention that you can upgrade your account temporarily (on a monthly plan for example) so that you can add more devices to your account and then cancel your subscription afterwards.
I hope this helps a tad, Tony.

Hey TonyMac! Thanks for posting this here.
To make sure I got it right; are you currently on a free Basic plan, and Dropbox doesn’t allow you to sign in with your old phone, because you’re hitting the device limit?
If yes, you can remove the old device you mention via your Security page, and try to log back in with your existing Dropbox account.
If I’ve misunderstood something, let me know.

If I delete the phone from my security tab then log back in, I will still hit this imposed device limit which came into effect after being a customer for more than 10 years. I’m listed as having 7 devices from 2009 until now. MacMini, MacBook Pro, iMac, iPad, iPad Pro, iPhone 7 and Android phone.
Deleting the phone will not help. Dropbox infrastructure should not fail to recognise the device just because it has a software update.
so I need a better solution.
