He installed the dropbox app and logged in but I still see the "Waiting for Install" status.

He installed the app on a computer? Mobile devices such as phones and tablets do not count. It needs to be the Dropbox desktop application and it needs to be on a unique computer (one never having had Dropbox installed before).

If its not showing as installed then its not installed using that account he signed up with. Note that installing from an App Store does not qualify. It must be from www.dropbox.com/downloading to a unique computer.
