Yes, there are a few methods of sharing a file, and when it's on the shared files page, then it can only be accessed from that page, and edited on the Dropbox site directly.

Yes they shared from the page you have listed. I have tried editing it online in excel online and I can edit it.

Also, can you clarify how exactly you have edit rights on this file if it was shared via a read-only folder with you?
- So this is both. The folder is shared with me as read only. Then one document in the folder is changed to "can edit" I cannot edit this file on linux. I have since tested it on Android and I cannot edit it there either. However if I use the web interface and edit it in Excel online, the changes do go through. Thanks,
