Why do shared folders take up my own account's space?
I'm working for someone who has a dropbox pro acocunt unlimited account.
However, it won't let me upload to his dropbox because I have a free account and limited storage.

You're not uploading into his account. You're uploading into a folder in your account, that happens to be shared with him. Since the folder exists in your account, it takes up space in your account.
If all you need to do is upload files to him, and you don't need to access those files after you've uploaded them, ask him to send you a File Request. You'll be able to upload files directly to his account without them taking up space in yours.
