    Hey BixiSLO, thanks for using Dropbox and happy Friday!

     

    Let me start by saying that what you described is one of the reasons we strongly recommend against using an external drive to store your Dropbox folder. 

     

    As for your request, there's no way to achieve that with Dropbox at this time as files won't become online only automatically after a period of time - you'd need to do it manually. 

     

    If you'd like to though, you can select which folders you'll be syncing locally to your device upon (re)installing the app via the advanced options.
