The folks that I'm trying to share the dropbox folder with do not have dropbox accounts.
I simply sent them a link to my folder via email.
I think the bottom line is they are not able to access my folder unless they sign up and pay for dropbox.

So the method by which I was able to share a folder with a non-dropbox account holder possible because the folder that I shared was smaller than 2GB...
I think I understand now.
