Re: Can the Shared folders be hidden?

Can the team folders be hidden?

Richard Anthony

We have a lot of shared folders visible with the staff but when opened, it is empty as the contents are not share with most of the staff...

is there any way to make these folders be hidden instead?

it would be great if these folders can be hidden to staff that are not accessing these folders or doesn't belong to such team.

Hi @Richard Anthony, thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Just for clarification, are these normal shared folders, or are they team folders (if you're part of a Dropbox Business team)?

This will help me to assist further!

Hi Jay,

These are team folders, like the Finance folders, HR folders etc, we can click to open and access it but since we are not part of that department, the contents are hidden/cannot be seen. it would be great if these folders can be hidden to staff that are not accessing these folders...

You can use groups to invite certain people to view or edit folders. Any person not a member of these groups wouldn't be able to see those folders at all.

Just make sure to remove the default 'Everyone at' group, once you've assigned the group members to the folders, in order to remove the entire team from those folders.

Hi Jay, thank you for this, I'll try it out.
But may I ask how to go about for those folders that have already been created and shared with everyone?
So that other department's folders can't be seen by those that are not part of that department.

Thank you.

That can be done by following the suggestion I made earlier. If we assume your whole team has 10 people (meaning in the default 'Everyone at' group), but the group you want has 3 only, create a group (Finance for instance) and add those 3 members to it.

Add that group to the Finance team folder, which should have the default 'Everyone at' group. Now remove the 'Everyone at' group from the folder.

Access won't change for the Finance group, since they still had access to it, but for those 7 users not part of the group, that folder should disappear completely from the site, mobile app and Dropbox folder on their machines.
