Renaming failed

Renaming failed

I attempted to rename a very large folder with all my stuff for work, and the process was underway for some time when the error message that the "rename failed" showed up.

It appears to have "taken" for the folder in the cloud, but the folder on my PC still has the old name.

I appear to be able to access my many hundreds of files from both places, so I'm wondering if some sort of damage was done that will rear its ugly head later. When I look at the situation via the "hidden apps" on the right-hand side of my Widows 11 taskbar, under "Syncs and Backups" there is a message at the bottom indicating "Updating 184 files." Initially it indicated "Updating 182 files," but then the number crept up over the several hours that have passed since I tried to rename the folder. Now it seems stuck and nothing is happening.

Do I need to worry? Should I be doing something to fix what happened or should I leave well enough alone? I'd love to have both instances of the folder named the same way, but am afraid of doing damage if I don't have advice on what to do. I'm a newbie at this.

Thanks!

Kathleen

In that case, could you give it a go and let me know if the syncing gets stuck at the same number of files again @KathleenWT?

Hi there @KathleenWT, thanks for using Dropbox and welcome to the Community!

Could you let us know the desktop app's exact status and version as shown in your taskbar at the moment? Is it 'up to date'  or still syncing perhaps?

Apart from that, have you rebooted your computer since you first noticed this?

Keep me posted!

Hello Walter,

Thanks for your response. I've been looking and haven't been able to see where to find the version.  Where do I find that?

When I click on the "hidden icon" on the right side of the taskbar, what comes up shows me, among other things, is that it is "Updating 202 files," and while I think it's trying, there's been no change in more than 12 hours.

Thanks!

Kathleen

Walter,

I forgot to tell you: I did not reboot the computer. Should I have? I thought it might interrupt some ongoing process and make things worse.

Walter,

Thanks for getting back to me. I restarted the computer, and now I get the message that everything is "Up to date." Now, when I check the Dropbox files on my computer, the large folder I renamed in the cloud is now also correctly renamed in the Dropbox folder on my PC.

Thanks for everything! All is well.

Kathleen
