Installation Failed Error Code 1073741795

I keep getting the same error over and over again.

I have tried every suggested resolution and nothing has worked. Anyone?

        Hi all,

I cannot confirm it, same error code appears when I try to install dropbox: 1073741795.

I have a German dropbox version here.

I've been on the same journey as Searson from a thread elsewhere in the community chat. I've been experiencing the exact error code:

To bypass a lot of the troubleshooting, I've already tried these fixes to no avail:

    • I meet the minimum system reqs to run Dropbox
    • I have a secure internet connection
    • Antivirus (Bitdefender), firewall, and VPN disabled/turned off
    • Firewall manually configured to work with dropbox
    • Creating another user profile on computer then installing
    • Tried to install app using typical installer (DropboxInstaller.exe)
    • Tried to install app using Offline Installer (134.4.4115)
    • Tried to install app using Offline Installer (140.4.1951)
    • Clicking on the hyperlink for advanced re-install - takes me to this inane help page:
Dropbox installer failed to start | Dropbox Help

Frankly, I've given up all hope. I'm past frustration or even anger, rather, I find myself impressed. Impressed that such an impenetrable issue persists and none of the internet witches and wizards can solve this conundrum of digital arcana.

Hey Kyle mcGill, thanks for joining our Community and sorry to see you're having trouble with our desktop app.

So, if I understand correctly, you never managed to perform the advanced reinstall, right?

Can you try following the steps in this article to see if it helps?

      Keep me posted.

I tried everything as well, nothing would work. Did someone find a solution?

    Win10Pro, 64-bit, v21H1

I was using a previous Dropbox version (116.4.368) on my PC and received a notice in the tray that I had 21 days to update Dropbox. I tried every method mentioned in the support link provided in the error message, including a full install after uninstalling the previous version, and continually receive this error.

Full message: "Installation failed with an unknown error (Error Code: -1073741795). See the link below for instructions to perform an advanced reinstall." and I have followed the instructions there without success.

Hi JenTo, thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Do you have any other apps on your device that could prevent the update of the Dropbox desktop application?

These could be apps that monitor or change the Dropbox folder in some way.

Keep me updated with any progress!

Hello there! Not that I'm aware of. Could you perhaps give me an example of programs that might interfere?

At one point before attempting reinstalling, I temporarily disabled my anti-virus/anti-malware program, but even then the desktop app would not install and ended with the same error message previously mentioned.

      • As you can see, I am subscribed to Dropbox's basic plan, and the devices section shows that I have both my old phone (which I have now removed), as well as my current device. The computer that I have connected to the internet previously was connected as well. However, that is not the case any longer.
      • Which browser is used cleared all history and cache or unstalled the current browser and installed again restart computer then used dropbox and enjoyed!
      • if not working again then used another browser to start the dropbox and enjoyed.

Hi, I'm not sure what you are saying or how it relates to my issue.

I have no trouble accessing the Dropbox website. I'm trying to reinstall the desktop app on my computer.

So are you saying my only option is to use the Dropbox website?

    Hello,

I am trying to update Dropbox (as version 120 stopped working...) but I am getting the following error:

Installation failed with an unknown error (Error code: -1073741795).

I tried the advanced reinstall, deleted all Dropbox folders and registry keys, but nothing worked. I also tried with three different versions of the offline installer: 129.4.3571, 143.4.4161, 144.4.4491.

My PC meets the minimum requirements: Windows 10, Intel i5 Skylake, 8GB RAM.

    Do you have any suggestions?

    Thanks!

What happened to the rest of this thread?  I had been following/commenting on three threads with the error code 1073741795; this was one of the three.  Now, none of my comments can be view as well as lot of comments by other community members/posters.

      Hi Megan,

Thanks for your response. Yes, I have tried the advance re-install, many times. I have tried many suggestions from the community with the same result. Same message as my first screen shot.

I am facing the same problem while installing the latest version of dropbox.

I tried all the possible ways to solve the problem, but still not solved and showed the same error again and again.

Hey indraj436, sorry to hear about this.

Just to clarify, have you performed an advanced reinstall yet?

Note that if you're on the Basic plan, there's a limit on the devices you can connect to your account. If you have more than 3, you'll need to remove any that are putting you over the limit and try to install the desktop app anew.

      Keep us posted!

Hi all - sorry to hear you're having issues with this.

For anyone affected, could you please try an advanced reinstall using the offline installer from this page and let us know if you're still getting this error?

    Thanks a bunch!

    Hi Everyone,

I'm currently running an old Win7 desktop with 4 GB ram and 1 TB drive, which doesn't get used that much these days, but occasionally I fire it up for a particular app. Dropbox has been installed for years without issue but on attempting to log-in it informed me that the current version was out of date.

I have successfully downloaded versions 150.3.4929, 155.4.5495, 157.4.4801 and 158.4.4564 but can only install v.150.3.4929. Attempting to install the other versions produces an error code 1073741795, which gave an unhelpful link. On searching through the community pages it does appear that this has been an ongoing problem for some time but doesn't appear to have been fully resolved, as far as I can gather. Is there anyone at Dropbox who might be able to shed some light on this rather vexing problem ? I have tried all the suggested remedies to no avail, so I am now wondering if it might be an issue with Win7 as it is not mentioned in the DB Windows drop-down list of operating systems.

Any help in this matter would be appreciated.

    Ian

Hey Idelone, thanks for your report.

It's true that Dropbox no longer supports Windows 7. The minimum requirement is now Windows 8 or higher. That said, your results when trying to install the desktop app may vary, exactly as you noticed.

I know it's not much, but I hope this helps to some extent, Ian.

As for you now hlussiatti, could you try a clean, advanced reinstall and let us know how it goes?

Just make sure to toggle off the early releases from your account's online settings to avoid reinstalling a beta version and download and install the desktop app from this page directly.
