File Explorer crashes on dropboxfiles in Windows 11 after update Windows

File Explorer crashes on dropboxfiles in Windows 11 after update Windows

Windows File Explorer crashes every time I acess the Dropbox folder. It does not crash in any other folder. Here's a few more details...

 - I can access my Dropbox files from within my programs, like vectorworks and Adobe.

 - I uninstalled and reinstalled Dropbox once, and booted my computer more then once.

 - My folder location is D:\DB\Dropbox

 - I can open that folder, but if I click on anything - a folder or file - Explorer freezes

Other local files justo open fine.  Assume started after last Windows 11 update.

Not using Dpbx Beta

Any identified issue and/or solution ??

Hi @wilfred01, let's see what we can find on this!

Have you tried restarting your device by any chance?

If I were you, I'd temporarily disable any antivirus or security programs on my computer too. And then reinstall the Dropbox application, just to see if that test will work.

You can find specific instructions for reinstalling the Dropbox desktop app in this Help Center article.

Let me know!

Thanks Megan,

I restarted several times.

Now all firewalls are off.

Avast and built-in windows.

Although dropbox is currently syncing the problem seems to be solved! but what do I do with security?

Can I put the firewalls on again or am I getting the same problems?

I've re-enabled the Avast and Windows firewalls, restarted the PC and dropbox works perfectly again... many thanks.

regards Wilfred.

Hi,

I find trouble openning Dropbox folder using the desktop app (in the explorer window). In the past it worked well on the same computer. Now after double clicking the folder, the folder keeps "thinking" (running the wheel). Sometimes after few attempts and after e.g. 5 minutes it opens, but 90% of times it fails at all. Previously it worked instantly as it should.

Uninstall of the app, restart of the computer, and the reinstall of the freshest desktop app version did not help.

What else could help? Any setting? Anything else?

Accessing the files via website works, however it was much more efficient via folder embedded in the explorer structure (desktop app). Thank you

Hi @kingfisher41, welcome to our Community!

What is the OS on the device the app is installed to? Do you have any idea as to how many files you're syncing locally to the device?

Could they be more than the 300K soft limit of the app? Also, let me know if you notice this type of behavior when you try to open any other path in your Windows device.

Let me know of any updates!

Hi @Megan , thanks for reply.

I use Win11 now. The same problem appeared again. Temporarily an update from Win10 to Win11 solved the issue. But after a while the problem returned.

I tried de-activate antivirus and Windows Defender, uninstall Dropbox and install again, but this didn't help.

I have ca. 3000 files within ca. 600 folders, total of ca. 2GB.

This happens only in Dropbox folder. Any other path in explorer works smooth.

I will appreciate any hint to solve this if possible

Hi @kingfisher41, if you try quitting the Dropbox desktop application temporarily, do you experience the same behavior in the Dropbox folder when opening folders?

Hi @Jay, thanks for reaction.

Yes, after quiting the problem persists.

Do you have any other app or service that scans or accesses the Dropbox folder itself, which could be slowing down the process?
