I recently got a new Macbook. On my old machine I had Dropbox plus destop app. I inadvertently downloaded Dropbox basic on my new machine. Now when I try to connect my plus account to a Desktop app I only get the Basic desktop app and no access to my old stuff. Any advice?

Hey @Eyfi, let's jump right into this!

When you say that you had the Dropbox Plus desktop app, do you mean that you had connected a Plus Dropbox account to your old machine?

I'm asking, because our desktop app is the same, and doesn't separate to Plus or Basic, that's essentially your Dropbox subscription.

It sounds like you possibly have two different Dropbox accounts. Have you tried signing out of the Basic one, and trying to connect your Plus one there?

Let me know more, and we'll take it from there!

Sorry for not being clear. My desktop app on my old computer was connected to my plus account. On my new computer automatically connects to my basic account.

Yes, I have tried to sign out of the basic one. But when I dowload the app from the plus Dropbox says: It looks like you already have the app and opens in basic.

Hey @Eyfi, if you sign out from our desktop app, it then prompts you to sign back into the correct account, which for you would be the Plus one.

You mentioned downloading the app from the Plus plan: would you mind walking me through the steps you follow on your end, please?

I go my initials in the top right corner. There I see the option: "Install Dropbox app". From there it is a standard procedure to install. What I get, however, is an app that automatically takes me to the basic account. I don't know if it matters that the e-mail addresses for the two accounts are different. Would solve the problem, you think, if I delete the basic account? I would not risk losing the stuff on my plus account by doing that, would I?

Hi Megan and thank for your willingness to help. How do I download the app? I am in my plus, go to my initials in the top right corner. There appears the option of downloading the Dropbox app. I click download and follow the instructions from there. You may want to know that I have different e-mails for the two accounts. I wonder if it would solve the problem if I simply delete the basic account. I presume the stuff on my plus account would not be affected by that, right?

Hi Eyfi! Hope it’s OK to jump in.

Deleting your Basic account wouldn’t affect the files stored on your Plus account, indeed. However, you shouldn’t need to do that, and the desktop app should be asking you what account you want to sign in to, after installing it.

Can you please send me a screenshot of what you’re seeing now on your computer, if the desktop app is already installed? It’d really help me to have a visual.

Hi Nancy, this is what I am seeing. The box in the middle shows my basic. My plus is in the background.

Thanks for that! Now, it looks like there’s no Dropbox icon in your menu bar (at the top, close to your clock settings).

What I want you to do is open your Finder again, go to Applications, and double click on the Dropbox app from there. Does the Dropbox icon appear in your menu bar after a few seconds?

If yes, I’d like you to go to the app preferences and try to log out of your current Dropbox account, and then sign back in with the credentials of your Plus subscription.

Let me know if that works.
