Uploading the zipped file to dropbox and unzipping it inside would save a lot of time and traffic for users. Some of the web services already exist for that (like this one http://www.quora.com/Is-there-a-way-to-decompress-a-zip-file-inside-Dropbox), but as they use their own server capacities, they cost money. Unzipping inside the dropbox may be an additional feature inside the dropbox itself. I would even pay for that a little xtra.

It would be really nice to be able to go into the Dropbox website or other UI, select a folder or set of files, and do "compress" or "zip". I'm currently in the process of zipping a bunch of archival material in my Dropbox to reduce file count and that would be a huge help, insteading of having to re-upload a big zip file, then delete the old files.

If this has not been addressed or seen by the Dropbox Team yet I, too, would like to have this feature. I believe it will benefit Dropbox's users, too. Upvoting.

I agree in full. I recently upgraded from Dropbox plus to Business to get access to smart-sync features. with over 550k files on dropbox, even on a mac pro 6 core with 64 GB memory, it's going to take 7-10 days to sort itself out (during which time, I'm going to sit through it, terrified and praying for an error-free transition). The only thing that I could possibly do at the moment (but can't unless I want to try and cowboy something with my ipad and iZip), would be to compress rarely viewed/used folders on dropbox ONLINE (local would just add to the chaos).
Even so, I would add to the above request (UPVOTING) that feature should allow:
a) Make ZIP of folder in web interface from selected files (result = original files + archive)
b) Move/Archive selected files to ZIP (result = archive only)
In a perfect world, and would expect no less from our friends at dropbox, who trump all other cloud storage frameworks in every way (expect for negotiating integration into MS Office!!), the contents of the Archive would be "viewable" in the web interface (kind of like archived mail) and would show up in the same way that smart-synced items do (or are supposed to... can't confirm until my dropbox has finished it's rediscovery process) in the local "copy" in the desktop app.
This isn't so much about saving space (yes, obviously and understanadably not in Dropbox's best interest to provide compression tools since they are in the business of selling cloud storage space!!), but a means of lightening the load when the 500k files threshold is exceeded.

I too vote the importance of zip functionality from within the web app. I'm in a situation where synching will take 150 days to sync 288K of files at the current rate. I obviously need to work now and can't wait. The alternative in the mean time for me was to download the whole dropbox assets and work offline but even though only 1GB to download I keep getting a message saying the files are too big. To split the files down is near impossible because it seems to be file count not file size that is the issue so I'd be breaking down levels deep into my filing system to do that.
Having no sync for 150 days and no download at all is super poor show. It has an impact on my business that is significant. Really lost my love of Dropbox.
Support has been average too and I guess with no real answer available, any wonder. Really uncool Dropbox. A must do feature.

Amen to that!

I agree.
I have the same request. I'm currently shifting the photo library to DB from GPhotos, and the Google buggy export tool creates several 2.15 Gb archives into the Dropbox folder. I've activated Selective Sync to exclude them from my desktop client (more than 80 Gb), and it would be really handy to decompress them directly into DB rather than download one, unzip and re-upload.

Agreed. Having to purchase another third party app is time consuming and cumbersome. I'd gladly pay for an in-app DB purchase and have native support.

+1
very needed feature for people using Dropbox inside IOS (that is, not from a PC nor a Mac, but just from an IPad).

Really needed Feature. Would Make me want to use dropbox more than other cloud storage companies.

Ditto. I download zips on my phone, send it to an app called Documents, unzip it, and then send it unzipped from Documents to Dropbox. What a pain.

YES PLEASE! For those of us using DB for audio recording applications could REALLY benefit from this.

Yes please, I use paid level of Dropbox to store quantity of files too large for my computer. (pictures) I cannot download and unzip, I need to be able to unzip within Dropbox for this to be a useful storage option for me.

I would really appreciate this feature as well. I would like it to be included as part of our company/group subscription, but would be willing to consider paying a little more if it were an add-on option.
