It would be really nice to be able to go into the Dropbox website or other UI, select a folder or set of files, and do "compress" or "zip". I'm currently in the process of zipping a bunch of archival material in my Dropbox to reduce file count and that would be a huge help, insteading of having to re-upload a big zip file, then delete the old files.

I too vote the importance of zip functionality from within the web app. I'm in a situation where synching will take 150 days to sync 288K of files at the current rate. I obviously need to work now and can't wait. The alternative in the mean time for me was to download the whole dropbox assets and work offline but even though only 1GB to download I keep getting a message saying the files are too big. To split the files down is near impossible because it seems to be file count not file size that is the issue so I'd be breaking down levels deep into my filing system to do that.
Having no sync for 150 days and no download at all is super poor show. It has an impact on my business that is significant. Really lost my love of Dropbox.
Support has been average too and I guess with no real answer available, any wonder. Really uncool Dropbox. A must do feature.
