What does the term "linking" mean?
Am I right in thinking that the word linking means being able to use one and only one dropbox account across/among several devices?

Yes, you could install the Dropbox app and sign in to your account, which would link that iPhone to your account. You could also just use the browser on your phone to sign in to the Dropbox website, though the functionality is lacking compared to using the mobile app.

Hi fcaco
You can use 1 account across 3 devices if you are a free user and unlimited if paid.
Linking is the term of connecting the software to the device

Thanks. So to be clear, if I normally use a computer to access the account via dropbox.com (not always the same one as I need to log on from different locations) and I then want to also use my Iphone, would I need to download the app from the App store onto my Iphone? Then I could see the contents of my dropbox there?

As a part of reaching the answers to my questions, how do I easily follow the thread of dialog on a particular subject? Must I always go to my email to be notified and then read the comments/answers? or can I access that information from within dropbox itself by hitting the notification bell? I've tried that but it doesn't bring me to the thread, just to lots of other questions and answers.
