If you only need view/download access, ask your client to send you a view-only shared link. You'll be able to view the files without affecting your account, but you won't have edit access.
If you need edit access then you'll either need to upgrade your account or, if they have a Business account, join their Business Team. Just know that if you join their Team account with your current account that you will be merging your account into theirs, effectively making them the owner of the account and granting them access to the files in your account. If you decide to join their Team, I'd suggest doing it with a new, empty account.
