    I solved my issue: I have a (seemingly unlimited) business and a free personal DropBox account. In my personal account, I accepted a share from another user. Unbeknownst to me, DropBox counts files shared by someone else to my storage limit. When it does that it grays out the icon and puts an x on it. No message, no information, no nothing. after I removed shares and other large files, the storage moved below my quota and the icon returned to normal.

    Shame on DropBox for

    • changing the icon on the app when only my personal account was over the space limits;
    • not providing a useful error message on why the icon changed;
    • counting files on someone else's storage limits on my storage limits as well;
    • not providing any help in solving the issue, even after contacting them via chat.
