Can I use an email forwarded for 'Email to Dropbox' feature for attachments?
I've enabled the email to dropbox feature and can receive emails to long email address supplied. I've tried setting up a shorter email on my custom domain to auto forward to the long address but it...
- 3 years agoIt can’t be done. I had got in contact with their advanced support team and below is the response I got:
Hello there,
Thanks for contacting Dropbox Support! My name is Iliana, and I am an Advanced Support Specialist. I will be assisting you further with this matter.
I understand you are trying to redirect emails to the "Email to Dropbox" email address. At this time, it is not possible to set up auto-forwarding or any email redirect because it requires a confirmation code sent to the "Email to Dropbox" address behind the scenes, and this code can not be received when not sent direct to the Dropbox-generated email. At this time, the Dropbox-generated email address is the only one that can be used to upload to Dropbox. The confirmation code is not something that you will see on your end.

Hi boj_man, let's see what we can find together!
Have you set-up the example random.long.name.generated@addtodropbox.com email address as the email address you want to receive the emails, under your Admin Console's settings?
As for the shorter email did you try swapping them on your settings?
Let me know more, and we'll take it from there.

Hi @Megan
Yes, I have setup the email in the settings. This is under a personal account, so there's nothing with label "Admin Console".
The email address is automatically generated. I can chose to generate a new one, but there doesn't seem to be an option to manually choose the email address. I have been able to send email attachments to that listed address and it receives them find if I directly email it, but not when it's using an auto-forwarder via my custom domain/mail server (cPanel based if that matters).
I have double checked the auto forwarding and the @addtodropbox.com email address matches what is in my settings.
My question is around auto-forwarding/redirecting emails. It seems that those emails are not supported from my few test emails. I wanted to know if there was a technical issue with the forwarding or if Dropbox just flat out doesn't support auto-forwarding/redirects for some reason.
Thanks

Hi boj_man, happy Wednesday!
Can you confirm that you followed the steps outlines in this Help Center article?
Keep in mind that this feature is for Business accounts, not personal ones. What do you see when you access your plan page? I'd appreciate a screenshot of the option where you enabled the feature, so I can have visual too.

Hi Megan
Sorry, you didn't link any help article in previous responses. However, the feature is enabled and working as I stated previously. It seems to only work if directly emailed.
My question still stands if automatic email forwarding/redirecting emails are accepted by Dropbox.
The forwarder I've set up works when I include an additional address to send it to, so it seems to be on the Dropbox side where the emails are either not received or not being processed correctly to add the attachments to the dropbox folder.Screenshots of the my free/basic account and a 2nd screenshot of the "Email to dropbox" feature enabled (with email address hidden)
