Hi LFW,
To prevent your files from being deleted - please go to the Dropbox Tray Icon on your Laptop, and sign out. This will unlink your laptop from your Dropbox account, and you can then Move the Dropbox folder to trash without impacting your Desktop/Mobile.
To do so - click on the Tray Icon -> Click on your initials icon (in the top right) -> Preferences -> Account -> Sign out.
