Decryption fails running iOS 14.2
Just updated iPhone and iPad to iOS 14.2. Now, trying to open an encrypted file, it tell me "Decryption Failed. Null" If I open with Excel, it works fine. Anyone else having this issue?

I also have success opening an encrypted file within Dropbox after updated 14.4 IOS update. Thanks for everyone's help and input.

Hi JohnK2, thanks for posting!
Could you send me a screenshot of the error that you're getting?
Also, what are the exact steps you're taking when you get this error?
When you mentioned opening the file through Excel, was this by opening the file through the Files app, or after exporting the file from Dropbox?
Keep me posted!

Also, on my iPhone, I open dropbox and go to that combo file. Enter my password and get the result above. If i click on the "open" button, then I am able to open in Excel with my password. Never had to do this before my iOS upgrade yesterday. My wife's phone has the exact same issue. We are able to open on our macs but not our iPads or iPhones.
- ltx5 years agoHelpful | Level 6I am also having this exact same issue/same error message after upgrading to iOS 14.2 yesterday.
- RonNich5 years agoNew member | Level 2Also having exact same issue on four separate devices after upgrade to iOS 14.2.

Valfother, the answer to your question is in this thread, did you actually start at the beginning and read through peoples posts?
- Iaincars5 years agoHelpful | Level 5Me too. Just installed 14.2 but it happens when opening excel file from email so not just dropbox
- Kritzstew5 years agoExplorer | Level 4Same here with a word document. Strange though, as I have 2 encrypted docs on Dropbox... one opens, the other doesn’t.

I am having exactly the same problem. I upgraded my iPhone and iPad to iOS 14.2 yesterday. Today I cannot open password-protected Word files on DropBox on either device. I get the same message as was posted earlier. I can open up files without a password but not any with a password. I hope there can be a fix or workaround for this.

same problem, I don't yet see a fix in the replies?
- Jonathan F.34 years agoHelpful | Level 6The fix is to open the file with the application (e.g., Word for iOS, Excel for iOS). The password works then. This is not an elegant solution, and hopefully DropBox will update their software to be compatible with the latest Apple operating system.
- Ken b4 years agoNew member | Level 2Same issue here. Password protected excel files won’t open. Get same “null” error. Have to open excel app to view them. Only started after ios14.2 update. Please fix!

Although the Apple support site has a number of complaints about this issue logged, it would be good for those who are on this Dropbox forum to log into the Apple site and log your complaint. Apple reviews its own sites, not sure how much they care about this Dropbox site or Microsoft, etc so the more the merrier on the Apple site in terms of us all getting this bug fixed.
There are many posts on this topic but this one seems to have the most views, over 3,500 so why not post your complaint here and make it even bigger to get Apples attention - iOS 14.2 Decryption Fails (null)

I continue to not be able to log in to any dropbox files on my Iphone- I get the "decryption failed" that everyone is getting. Also, the workaround of opening the document in Microsfot Word app on phone does not work either- document will not display.
Is there anything I can do now or is this truly caused y latest apple update and I just need to wait?
Thanks.

I diiscovered the work around to this. After entering your password and getting the "Decryption failed (null)" message you will see a square with a line drawn from the upper right corner to the center of the square. Tap that square icon, select "Microsoft Word" (I assume if you are attempting to open another type of file that application name will be listed). Re-enter the password and the file opens.

If you have MsOffice great. Otherwise access the files from a different platform convert to pdf and save alongside the original. You should be able to open the pdfs but of course there is not much that you can do with them.

I did that, but now Excel won't let me EDIT and SAVE without buying a 365 Subscription! I don't want to spend the money.
- Nealwald4 years agoHelpful | Level 7If you have a device with a screen smaller than 10.2 inches you can create and edit excel docs with a free Microsoft account using iOS excel.
- Jonathan F.34 years agoHelpful | Level 6I have the same issue with a password-protected Word file. Will Apple fix this, or is it something that Dropbox can fix?

I continue to have this issue with iOS 14.2 - even after ensuring that all apps are up to date. Anyone have any current information on this?

Right I have installed WORD on my iphone 11 then I have gone into my Dropbox on my PC and re-saved all the WORD docs to Word .docx as some were Macro enabled. Now they all have the Word application on the bottom of the screen when I open Dropbox on my phone so I can finally open all the WORD files this way. Thank you people for your help!
- Nealwald4 years agoHelpful | Level 7Yes you must have iOS word of iOS office installed on your phone. It should work fine.
