Is there any way to enable a warning that another user has an autocad file open when you go to open that same file throught dropbox? I am looking for something similar to the dropbox badge that appears when you open files in mircrosoft products.
I saw that, when we are working in the same .doc file, Dropbox ask if you want to block the file to the other users.
But, in the case of AutoCAD (.dwg files), that option don't appear and the 2 members of the same team can open the file at the same time without asking for writing rights.
I think it will be very useful if Dropbox detects when a file is already open.
I guess it will be easy to implement this option in dropbox because when you open a .dwg file, Autocad creates a temporarly .dwl and .dwl2 files in the same folder that could indicate the file is open by other user. Could you add this option in Dropbox?
It is so absolutely amazing that Dropbox and Autodesk are partners but can create an environment when drawings are open they show up as read-only across the Dropbox network! I know it can be done because that environment exists with the Microsoft Office environment.
P.S. I know this not a new idea. Get your act together and give your users the experience they deserve.
+1 for this feature. Our Architecture firm is planning to move to Dropbox as a "server" and while we are normally very good about communication and not working in the same file at the same time, it would be great to replicate what currently exists for the Microsoft suite and display some sort of notification that the file is currently in use by another Dropbox team member.
Wow what a complete shame. You asked for more requests for this feature and when a new request came in you changed the status to “not right now”.
Suggesting to use the file lock setting shows a complete lack of knowledge for and understanding of using Dropbox as a central server for CAD files. Especially disappointed given the existing partnership and relationship between Dropbox and Autodesk.
It seems that Dropdox doesn't want the millions of autocad users because Autocad users don't have time to vote.... or maybe this Autocad users don't want to migrate to Dropbox because this issue.
Yeah. Insane that the only metric to gauge whether or not they should build out a feature is if a customer is so pissed off they have to go complaining about it in public forum.
You’d think the many talented Dropbox employees could come up with a more clever solution to finding out if this feature would be worth the effort. Like sending out a survey to customers who have .dwg files stored in their account.
I guarantee you many people don’t have the energy or are even aware that forums exist and that is the only avenue for feature requests, let alone AutoCAD users specifically.
Please reconsider your approach to this feature request, and talk to your contacts at Autodesk. You already have a relationship. Take it to the next level.
