Sync dropbox across multiple locations/hard drives
I have a larger dropbox account than my primary hard drive. It would be great if dropbox could support virtual links to files outside of it's default location, without those files having to also be in the main dropbox folder. I am aware of shortcuts/aliases on windows/OSX, but those don't solve the problem if my primary drive has limited space.
This is one workaround, but native support through the Dropbox client would be ideal: http://bobmckay.com/software/split-dropbox-across-multiple-drives

what's the latest with these requests? I agree, there is little point in having 1TB of dropbox space when primary harddrive storage is a faction of this. Being able to sync across drives would be a great solution.

Yes. I used the junction link workaround, but it's not an ideal solution. It would be nice if Dropbox offered an integrated solution to this.

a few months ago Dropbox stop the support for symbolic link for files located outside dropbox folder, now that it doesn't work any more, dropbox users have to pay a lot of money to 3rd party programs in order to sync files located outside the dropbox folder.
please make it possible again because it's a really essential feature! - alsoruNew member | Level 2
There are problem if the dropbox folder is placed in different volume from user folders like My documents and you want to use automatic backup of user folders.
I suggest adding the ability to Dropbox Desktop Client to work with folders located on multiple Windows drives (C:,D:,etc)

Hey.
I would like to suggest that you make this feature of 'Backups' further available for clients who do not have there dropbox folder on the internal harddrive of your macbook but use an external harddrive as your dropbox folder.
As surely I am not the only user to use an external harddrive as there dropbox folder instead of having it on the internal harddrive as some of the internal harddrives are not big enough to for the dropbox plan i am on or require. but...
it would still be nice to backups>This Mac feature availble to me.
As you can see from below because my dropbox and folder are on different drives it does not allow me to set this feature up, I believe many of your clients will be in the same situation as me and would like to use this feature but aren't allowed.
Please could you look at updating this feature? Thanks.

I totally agree with this idea! The description can be a bit more clear. I've rewritten the requirements in 3 requirement: 1A, 1B and 2.
1A- Feature "computer backup" should be available also when the dropbox-folder is fysically located on another drive than the main drive of the Operating System (so not only on C: but also on another internal drive or external drive)
1B- Feature "computer backup" should be available also when the computerfolders (Downloads, Documents, Pictures, Videos, Desktop, Music) are fysically located on another drive than the main drive of the Operating System (so not only on C: but also on another internal drive or external drive)*** Requirement 1A and 1B are a "must-have". Most users will be satisfied when this is available. Next step would be the following "should-have" requirement:
2- Feature "computer backup" should be available when the computerfolders (Downloads, Documents, Pictures, Videos, Desktop, Music) are fysically located on another drive than the drive where the Dropbox-folder is fysically stored.

How is it not currently possible to have Dropbox on disk C and work documents on another large capacity disk?

I have an HP Laptop running Windows 10 and it has 2 hard disks, one is an SSD for the system and applications and the second one is a normal HD for the Data. This is a worldwide normal configuration for mobile Workstations like this one (in my company more than 500 persons have mobile workstations con 2 HD and most are suffering same problem than me with DropBox).
The problem is the Dropbox can not sync System folders (Desktop, Download, Documents, Music, Images and Video) if I move it to another ubication different than the System volume, but Windows is alouding to move these folders to another HD because it is logical that if you have 2 HD you want to put all data in a different HD than the system (the SSD are expensive and normally smaller capacity than the Normal HD)
So I can't make Back Up of my computer.
Also need that Dropbox aloud me to Sync any folder I want, not only the Dropbox folder.

I'd really like this feature. An additional sync location on an external HDD so I can keep those files backed up too.

I would love a feature like that described above. I am running a MacBook Pro with only 128GB hard drive. I have an additional 130 GB Transcend SD card permanently in my MacBook, on which I store my music and photos. It would be great to be able to sync both the DB folder on the hard drive which contains documents etc, as well as the two folders on the removable (yet always installed) SD card.

Does anyone know any other cloud services that do offer this sort of thing? I'll be cancelling my subscription unless Dropbox steps up and implements a feature like this.

I hope they do something about this soon as I might be cancelling my pro account due to this issue. I have the 1TB pro version and a laptop drive that is only 500gb with my laptop maxed out and would like to keep my most used dropbox folders on my Laptop's SSD and keep the rest of the files that aren't used as much on an external drive for when I work and need them.

Regarding this feature if it is ever added: When we add an external HDD as a sync location, we should indicate to DB that it is removable so that if it is not attached when we boot up DB won't assume that it has been deleted and delete our sync'd files. Rather it could have an indicator on the icon and when we click it we see the locations which cannot be sync'd with an option to remove it or ignore for this session.

Has anyone tried the method described here?
