Why am I getting the 'user wants to join your Dropbox team' emails?

Why am I getting the 'user wants to join your Dropbox team' emails?

Hi! We started getting these [Removed as per Community Guidelines] emails whenever someone tried accessing our shared files through shared links. Please explain why it happens and how to stop getting these messages.

Thanks!

Hi @iviansur, thanks for bringing this to our attention.

It's possible that you might have had this change occur on your shared links, which could result in this behavior.

Are the people accessing the links users who accessed it previously, or new users entirely?

This will help me to assist further!

Hi @Jay. Thanks for your prompt response! From the information I can track, it's a mix of both, but primarily new users. I also suspect that links generated by certain team members are triggering this behavior, though I'm not sure how to verify and confirm that.

Do the shared links have edit access or read-only access enabled?

I can only check this through the Activity menu in the admin console. Those who requested (whether intentionally or not) to be added to the team accessed links with viewer and editor access levels. I can investigate internally with the team if you need more specific details.

That would be helpful, since read-only links shouldn't have the option to join.

Another thing to check would be if the shared links contain an rlkey in them.

@Jay, all links contain rlkey. Some are read-only, while others have the 'can edit' setting. I suspect that the editable links are causing the issue. I’m unsure what those attempting to access the shared links are pressing that triggers this behavior.

With the shared links that have edit rights, there is a button users can click to add the file or folder to their own Dropbox account, which would then send the 'request access' emails you've been receiving.

Thank you @Jay. Is there a way to turn off such notifications in settings? Maybe allow notifications only if someone is deliberately invited to a shared folder to collaborate?

The notifications that you can enable or disable are visible on this page. There isn't any option to change these kinds of notifications sent to your email.
