Dropbox Folder Currently on External Drive - Safe to upgrade to Mac OS Sonoma 14.4

Hi everyone,

We have a 2019 Mac Pro with an external 24TB Raid HDD. This is where our Dropbox Folder currently resides and works great.

Last year, we heard about Dropbox forcing the DB folder to an internal drive (which caused quite a scare). It is my understanding this rollout has been paused until a workaround is found. Correct me if I am wrong please.

Considering the above to be correct, am I ok to update the Mac OS to Sonoma 14.4 without issues to our Dropbox folder? The official Dropbox response didn't exactly clarify Mac OS X firmware updating.

Much appreciated.

Hey ehcropydoc, I hope you're doing well!

I believe you're referring to the MacOS change for File Provider, is that correct?

We’ve collaborated with Apple on addressing the issue, as we transition users to Dropbox for macOS on File Provider.

As this Help Center mentions: "The majority of external drive users aren’t eligible to migrate to Dropbox for macOS on File Provider. However, a small group of external drive users may still receive this update."

I think you shouldn't have any issues updating to Sonoma 14.4, if you didn't receive the update on your end.

    I hope this helps!

Ok so it appears I am not eligible (which is a good thing) considering my DB Home folder resides on an External RAID. Therefore, I should be a-OK to upgrade to Sonoma without the DB home folder jumping on me. 😅
