Why can't I open Microsoft files on my mobile device?
I updated my iPad Pro & now I can't open Dropbox files in Microsoft apps. I can see Dropbox, and I can open in other apps (Adobe, for instance), but Word, Excel, etc. tell me that the server is gone ...

I did some testing this morning. I hadn't yet updated to the latest iOS version, and Dropbox and Office were still working just fine. I updated to iOS 12.1.4 and started having the same issues listed in this thread; I wasn't able to open Office files from Dropbox and when I disconnected Dropbox from Office, I wasn't able to re-connect it.
I then upgraded my device to iOS 12.2 Beta and was able to relink Dropbox and Office and open files without issue just as before.

Thank you. Please remember to update your status page when errors start to occur. It actually still says that nothing like this happened yesterday.

The solution here did not work for me. I was informed that Microsoft Is treating the iPad Pro like a computer, and is requiring you to purchase Microsoft 365 to access the apps.
Now I’m receiving warnings on my iPhone that is counting down my free access to Excel, meaning I’m going to have to sign in, purchase, a 365 account.
Dropbox needs to resolve this: Do we have to pay or not have to pay For Microsoft access even though the app is on our device? Dropbox will not allow me to access a spreadsheet using Apple software. I need a comprehensive and seamless solution to access and modify spreadsheets and text documents, if that is using Microsoft or Apple, I don’t care, I prefer Microsoft since that is the standard. Let’s put out an official statement (on your website, not in the forum section) and stop the lack of transparency of fees I have to pay to use apps that are already on my device.

The statement already exists, and has existed since the feature was released.
Do I need a special license to edit my Dropbox files in an Office Online application?
If you have a Dropbox Basic or Plus account, you will not need a Microsoft account or Office license to edit your files.
If you have a Dropbox Business account, you will need an enterprise Microsoft account with a license that allows editing in Office Online (Business, Business Essentials, Business Premium, ProPlus, E1, E3, E4, or E5).
Additionally, if you're using a tablet larger than 10", Microsoft requires that you have an O365 license to use Office applications.
And remember that the licensing restrictions are put in place by Microsoft, and not Dropbox.

Office can be used for free on iPads (or tablets) with a screen below 10".
As your iPad Pro has a bigger screen, you can't use Excel, Word or PowerPoint without subscribing to Office365. It's not a DropBox issue.

I'm still seeing comments on this issue, but I'm just the customer who started the thread a while back. My issues are all resolved, and I do own Windows 365 on all my devices, so it's not a problem for me.
- david k.1296 years agoHelpful | Level 5Please put this in a different thread regarding licensing.
