After using the Apple Migration Assistant, I ended up with two Dropbox folders.

I have used Apple's Migration Assistant to move all my content from one Mac to a new Mac. I keep all of my Dropbox files on my computer, so all my Dropbox files are transferred to the new Mac. Now Dropbox is creating a new Dropbox folder and downloading all of my files.

How should I best handle this?

  • Thanks, but I checked that right away - no selective sync. I have now manually recreated my full Dropbox folder. For some reason, the "Dropbox (Old)" that Dropbox created contained more files than the new Dropbox folder Dropbox created and synced to my account on the web.

It was be nice if Dropbox would include instructions and advice on using Apple's Migration Assistant with Dropbox.

Did you tell Dropbox when setting up the install to use the already created directory? You usually need to do this via the Advanced Install menu options.

Unfortunately, no. I didn't know advanced install was a option, and Dropbox automatically renamed my existing Dropbox folder and created a new folder. It took much of the night, but I have a second Dropbox folder now. Any suggestions on the best way to proceed now that I have two folders?

Hey fortinne. Is the Dropbox app currently up to date

What you can do now is pause the Dropbox app’s syncing, consolidate everything into one Dropbox folder (the one that’s currently syncing to your online Dropbox account) and then, resume syncing again.

Actually, we'll definitely keep this in mind fortinne.

Is it safe to assume everything's on track now? 😀 Or do you still face some issues with the syncing of your content?

Yes, everything is fine now. Thank you for asking.
