Renaming
19 TopicsI'm unable to rename a file after copying it from another sub-folder on my Mac.
Having this issue over the past several months. Saw another thread where others were having the same issue, but that thread was locked. I copy a file from one subfolder in Dropbox to another subfolder on my Sonoma 14.5 Mac, (Dropbox v199.4.6287) and then I can't rename the file. This doesn't happen every time, but has happened a couple of times in the last 4 months since Jan 2024, and may have started happening before that. Other files in the same folder have the Dropbox Quick Actions context menu items when I right click on them. This file does not. I can open the file, change contents, and save, and that works. I can copy the file with a ctrl-c / cntrl-v in the same folder, and then the copy of the file appears to inherit the same problem, I can't rename it either. I can delete the file. A menu item "Do not sync" is not available in the right click menu for this specific file, although not in the Dropbox Quick Actions section of the right click menu. If I quit the Dropbox app, still can't rename the file, start Dropbox back up, still can't rename the file. Force quitting the Finder, which then automatically restarts, all the finder windows ... does work! So letting others know this is a workaround for this problem rather than rebooting the whole computer, which also works. But this does appear to be a bug around something with file copying in Dropbox folders, unless it's a Mac OS level bug. I noticed after restarting the Finder that the little green circle with the check-box next to the filename is back, which wasn't showing before, so there was something going on with Dropbox integration with the finder perhaps.1.8KViews0likes13CommentsCan naming conventions be applied to subfolders?
We are cleaning up our organization's Dropbox folders and implementing a simple naming convention (separating file names with spaces, not dashes). When I set a naming convention for a folder, I would like that naming convention to apply to all subfolders. Is that possible? I gave it a try, and it appears that I would need to set the convention for each individual folder - which, for our organization, would take ages! Any ideas?506Views0likes1CommentMove a subfolder to a different folder without losing shared link?
I've sent mail to various individual, embedding a link to one of my dropbox file. What happens if I rename or move the folder containing that file to a different location, always inside my Dropbox root folder? Thanks in advance LuigiSolved976Views0likes3CommentsIssue renaming a file when the process of renaming the previous file isn't finished
Every time I want to rename a file, I have to wait because during the renaming process, if I start renaming the next file, when the renaming process of the first file is finished, it takes me back to renaming the first file again and the subsequent work on renaming the next files gets disrupted and everything remains as it was - very inconvenient - try renaming all files in a row without waiting and you will see it. When I want to exit a folder to go to the previous folder - it throws me back to the folder that was the initial one, not the previous one - this is inconvenient and I have to perform an extra action in my work. Perhaps it's possible to allow renaming folders and files without interruptions and bags?484Views0likes3CommentsWhy does Dropbox insist on renaming my files?
2020: "Stop renaming my files! (on auto phone upload)" by BoxyBeat https://www.dropboxforum.com/t5/Dropbox-installs-integrations/Stop-renaming-my-files-on-auto-phone-upload/td-p/391599 Dropbox response was: "interesting indeed". Then they are like; let us learn what you have uncovered that we still don't know. Like, let's go out there and jump through the hoops together to confirm if the files are named based on when the files are created (recording starts) or when they are last modified (recording stops). What difference does it make? Just stop renaming people's files!? They go on to explain that this is the expected behavior... duh! They never explain why this is, even though the author specifically requested an explanation from Dropbox as to "why" this is. They said they moved the question to the "Share an idea" section. They closed the question for further comments so that anyone who feels the same way about this Dropbox misbehavior can start their own discussion about it, like I'm doing right now, and we can all pretend that no one really wants this "feature", because the discussion activity is low and no one is voting. They even go as far as closing supposedly "shared ideas" for lack of support by other members of the community of users, before it even has a chance to reach the right team at Dropbox, Inc. With so many filters along the way, I would be surprised if any Dropbox features is ever a direct result of user input. Dropbox has its own fixed ideas of how to do things, and that's how it's going to stay. Like it and use it, or don't like it and move on to using something else. This is the example of a shared idea that has been closed due to lack of support. 2021: "Stop renaming files" by Pete3000 https://www.dropboxforum.com/t5/Dropbox-ideas/Stop-renaming-files/idi-p/510186 Allow such ideas to stay open for a good while and see what happens. You will never get enough votes if you keep closing ideas and keep closing discussions. You will always blame it on lack of interest by other users, and users will keep creating new topics for the same old discussions, and keep sharing the same old ideas without it ever being forwarded to the right team at Dropbox, Inc. It's so obvious right now that you are genuinely not interested in what we users have to say or what we think of your apps and services. Not when you keep shutting us off, closing our topics of discussion and keep closing our "shared" ideas before they can gather enough votes and traction, and before they ever reach the right team. You're doing this on purpose. And that's OK. It's your product and your service. I just wanted to call you out and let you know that I can see through your charade and I don't agree with your practices. So let us have it... why are you changing the names of our files? And more importantly, why are you not allowing us to decide for ourselves if we want your app to change the name of our files or not? There is a way to set up naming conventions with Dropbox, but it does not apply to the mobile app and camera uploads. It applies only to the web and the desktop app (the option links back to the web for setting it up, there is no interface for it within the desktop app itself). "How to use naming conventions in Dropbox" https://help.dropbox.com/files-folders/sort-preview/naming-conventions Despite this advanced and elaborate way to exactly specify how to name and organize files in Dropbox (as long as you're not using the mobile app), and despite having several preset naming rules to choose from, having no rule at all is not a selectable rule or option. I am very disappointed with Dropbox right now. It feels like with each passing year I have less and less reason to use Dropbox. You have already reduced the number of devices allowed to sync from 5 to 3 (if I remember correctly) on the free plan. I wouldn't actually mind getting a premium plan if you did things a little differently and you got rid of the excess bulk you have invented in recent years like Paper, Transfer, Vault, Spaces, and what not, the list keeps growing. Dropbox has moved well beyond what used to be its core business idea, and it's far from working ideally, and I don't want to be paying for the things I don't intend to use.Solved13KViews13likes21Commentsduplicate file names
I make the same folders for my clients every year. I am trying to figure out how can I copy file names (only) from 2023 and create the name 4 folders in 2024 without having to type all of that for each client. is there a copy and paste for the group of 4 folders?537Views0likes1CommentRenaming failed -"folder or file somewhere open."
I want to rename a folder. It worked with other folders but not with this folder. It says, "folder or file somewhere open." I am not aware that I have any files open. I shut down the computer - then also, all files are closed? Or am I wrong?Solved2.1KViews0likes4CommentsBug when adding a file in a folder and change the name of the folder
Hi!! I think i found a bug. to replicate it: 1- create a folder, name it ' folder 1' and add a file. 2- change the name of the folder to 'folder 2' while the file is uploading (or in the queue) 3- create a new folder with name 'folder 1'. Expected: the file is in the folder 'folder 2' But the file is being saved in the second folder, the one with name 'folder 1'. Probably its matching with the name instead of matching with the id, somehow I also tried when the file is already in the folder (not uploading/ queue) and it works perfectly in that case. I find myself often choosing Rename, Copy, and Paste when I want to give a new file a similar name to a previous one that already exists in the same folder. Also, sometimes I need to include the file name in an email, so I have to follow the same tedious process. It would be great if Dropbox could please add an option in the Dropbox iPhone app to simply copy the file name, as it would save ALOT of time and should not be too difficult to implement. Thank you for the consideration.756Views0likes3Comments
