Orange box icon meaning
What does this orange box icon means? I'm on desktop, windows 11.

It's not a Dropbox icon. It's from OneDrive. You likely have OneDrive and Dropbox trying to sync the same data, which will never work correctly.
- WalterDropbox StaffHey SistemasMVH1, thanks for posting on our Community!
The folder icon you're noticing there is not coming from Dropbox, but probably from Microsoft Excel. Have you reached out to them to ask for more information?

So this isn't just an Excel issue, I'm a video editor who works on a Windows desktop and I seem to be getting this icon on a lot of my media and I don't know why. Dropbox needs to look into this though, it seems to be unsyncing random assets from my projects when I haven't told it to. The assets I had sync previously get this folder icon and then seem to unlink and go back to online only. Please advice on this, it is getting very frustrating.

Hello Community Members, Can you please tell me what this dropbox icon means?
- DG111Helpful | Level 5
Hi Walter,
Thank you for that, but unfortunately none of the suggestions have made a difference. It is not a OneDrive icon so am not sure where to go from here 😞
EDIT: Actually it is a OneDrive icon. See my reply further down.

I get these brown file boxe icons on my dropbox files that prevents me from opening my files. Does anyone know what causes this? I use Windows 11 Version 10.0.22000. Would greatly appreciate help.

Hi, I am having this issue on my computer but do not believe i have one drive installed or active on my computer. Also it seems only some of my files cannot be accessed. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I have an issue with dropbox, all my files CANNOT be opened, its giving ERROR in opening! keeps giving me same message for all the files, all files be word, pdf or excel. I had One Drive which after reading the thread, uninstalled and restarted the computer YET the problem persists.
Can Dropbox support HELP! or someone from the community assist how to solve the problem. I have tons of data that cannot be accessed despite all permutations.

Hi AKM1
I'm afraid the issue isnt with Dropbox so we cannot help here - the issue is with OneDrive.
My guess is that the files were marked to online only in OneDrive and so not actually on your local machine. You need to either download from OneDrive's website, or, reinstall and download them that way first.

How to remove it. I'm told it is a onedrive issue
- WalterDropbox Staff
Hey MAK1954, did you try the steps outlined in this article?

Hi,
I see that there already is a thread regarding "Orange box icon meaning". It seems OneDrive is conflicting with dropbox, blocking synchronisation (I cannot open the files with that orange box icon from my computer).
Problem is I do not use Onedrive and do not have it installed, which means I doubt uninstalling it will solve anything.
Is there another fix for this?

If the dropbox logo is in the bottom right corner near the time (Windows) right click it, then when the pop up comes up click on your initials in the top right corner, a drop down box will open and click on preferences. A new window will pop up for dropbox preferences, click on the sync tab. There is a section that says "save hard drive space automatically" yes or no. I had no checked, which is what you want, but then there is a drop down selection to the right that allows you to choose "available offline" or "online-only" choose available offline. I had online-only selected and as soon as I switched it to available offline all the little boxes went away.
There maybe another way to get to dropbox preferences, above is how I found it.

Thanks. That was the problem. I do not know when it happened but it was set to available offline then switched to on line. My files are back now!

Yes!

I have one of these in the lower right corner of every file and I cannot open them or make this go away no matter how I set syncing. Any ideas?
- WalterDropbox Staff
Hey mhuppertz - sorry to hear you're having issues with this.
This icon doesn't come from Dropbox, but OneDrive. I've merged your post into this discussion so that you can have a look for more information.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
