Be able to change Dropbox backup folders names

Be able to change Dropbox backup folders names

Add possibility of rename Backup folders. If you have only one computer, it go fine, but if you have more than one, it ends being very confussing. Due iCloud Drive issues, I've changed all of my Macs "synchronized" Desktop and Documents to Dropbox. However, take a look to the picture:

It is very difficult to guess what is what. With the possibility to rename them, I could have named "My iMac", "My MBP 13", "My MBP 15". Very easy to see what is what.

(As a workaround, we can change to detail view, but could be more easy for all of us be able to change the names).

Hi all, I just wanted to let you know that the team is working on this idea!

Some backups and backup folders are currently able to be renamed, and we are working to upgrade all backups to have similar functionality

Thanks for sharing your suggestion with us and to everyone for supporting it.

Far too long without an update.  Has there been any progress or any "reasonable" work arounds?

More than 3 years (!!!) later and still NOT possible to rename my Dropbox backups.
What a joke this is.

What is going on with this? I see that this has been an open issue for years, and it is an issue no one used to have since these backups were named the same as the computer they came from. When am I going to be able to rename these backups?

Hi there @mathydv and @MBernhardt  🤚🏽

Sam from the Community here, checking if this is the feature you might be looking for?

If you go to https://www.dropbox.com/backup/all, you can edit the names either by using the menu ellipsis or the Rename prompt at the top.

Let us know,

Hey @MBernhardt,

This should be available in Dropbox Backup Beta. You can find more in here.

So I am trying to understand. In order to move to backup beta, I have to turn off backup for all 4 computers and then turn them on again? Because I only see a few backup options when I try it on the one computer that doesn't currently use backup. Is there anything else I have to do?

@Sam DBX  looks promising, but I don't like using beta versions of software, especially when talking about back-ups...

Any idea when this will be officially released?

Hi @MBernhardt, if you want to move to Dropbox Backup Beta, you will need to delete and re-enable Backup for all your devices (if you have more than one). Also, good to note that you won't be able to roll back to the previous version once you update.

Hey there as well @mathydv. Unfortunately, I can't speak for our Product teams regarding deadlines, but I know Beta Services are an awesome way to gather user feedback. If you're curious about our 'Alpha' and 'Beta' processes, we have a bit more info here.

Cheers,

Sam

OK, thank you. I also use CrashPlan AND Apple's Time Machine, so I'm not so worried about loss of data from a Beta version. For me, the sole purpose of the backup feature is to be able to access certain files in Documents/Desktop/Downloads from another computer, like I do any other files in DropBox.

What I don't understand is why they didn't simply add the ability to change the name as a small extra feature instead of rolling it into a major functionality change. The backups used to be named clearly, as you can see in one of my screenshots above. DropBox removed that clarity for reasons unknown. And for reasons unknown, those old names remain on 2 computers while the other 2 are called Mac3 and Mac4!
