Colleague's updates on a folder got removed and a conflicted copy folder was created

While working on a project (the file size was about 100 GB) dropbox deleted everything that my friend uploaded and opened a folder of conflicted copies on his computer.
we did not do anything on files at the same time and still this problem occurred.
Please help!

Something on one of your machines has edited the files at the same time.... BUT my guess is that due to the size of the files while it may not have been opened at the same time they hadn't fully sync'd to both machines before it was opened. So although you may have closed the files if those changes hadn't sync'd from you to Dropbox and them Dropbox to his machine and he opened them it would have created a conflict because the files he opened were out of date.
The files shouldn't have been deleted off your machine, or his, what you should end up with is 2 sets - one normal (i.e. yours with the edits) and the conflicts which have his edits in.
Unfortunately you now need to manually update and merge the changes.
