How to make the most of your space in the free Dropbox account

With a Basic plan, you have 2GB of space to work with. That can be a lot or a little depending on how you use it. If you use your space to keep a collection of Dropbox Paper docs, you might never hit your limit, but if you share a lot of folders with a lot of folks you might run low on space.  Here are some tips to make the most of the space and the features you have.

Get your files from the right places:

With Dropbox Basic, it’s easy to get to your files from anywhere - computers, phones, and tablets so you can make sure you’re uploading the most important files from the most important places. Don’t feel you have to back every file up to one account - you can pick and choose which ones you really want to save.

Bow out of bloated shared folders:

I know we can all get added to folders we don’t really need to be in. While it might be good to see the photos from Aunt Carol’s European tour, you might not need to have a shared folder taking up space in your Dropbox account forever. Hover over the name of the folder you'd like to remove and select the share icon. Select the dropdown next to your name and then click Remove my access. Easy.

Detox your files:

You can delete things you don’t need, without worrying you get rid of the wrong file. With file recovery you can easily restore anything you’ve deleted in the past 30 days from dropbox.com. Even if you didn’t delete it, you just changed it, with version history you can roll a file back to any version saved to Dropbox in the past 30 days. So now you can go through and Marie Kondo your files with confidence.

Work life separation:

Keep your work and personal files separate so that your personal account stays below your limit. Dropbox team users can have both a personal and work Dropbox on any computer, mobile device, and on dropbox.com. This means you can keep your files separate and accessible from anywhere. To learn more, visit our help center article on connecting personal and work Dropbox accounts.

Earn more space:

A simple way to make the most of your space is to… well… make more space! Check out how to do that here.

If you’re really strapped for space, it might be time to upgrade.

These are just a few tips to help keep your files and folders in tip top shape and to make sure you have enough space for the important stuff.
