Why do I need a license to edit Word and Excel files now?
So this just happened today. I can't create new Word or Excel files, nor can I edit existing ones. There is now a paywall that says I need a commercial Office 365 version.
Um what?

Hi,
I had a response from Prenium Support.
The problem is that there was no licence verification from Dropbox until now and the only licences that allow you to modify files online are Office 365 Business, Business Essentials, Business Premium, ProPlus, E1, E3, E4 or E5.
Since we have A1 education licences, we won't be able to use this function.
They sold us Dropbox and made us think that we would be able to and now I don't see what are the benefits from using Dropbox instead of OneDrive since we don't have to pay for OneDrive with Office 365...

Hi, I have the same issue as the one described in a post that has the same name as mine, no solution is actually given and I need help.
I use a dropbox business account, I do have Office 365, and I have been using Microsoft Excel Online for months it was fine, but now all of a sudden it's also asking me to subscribe to Office 365 when I'm already.
Can you help me please, thank you,
Kido

Hey there Kido,
Could you just confirm for me if you currently have one of the licenses required by Microsoft to be able to use the integration with the Business subscription? You can find the list of licenses from this article here.
If you do have one of these licenses and are still having issues with using the integration, please let me know and we can look into this further.
Let me know - thanks!

I am having the same problem on a client's business account. Editing docs in dropbox online for months and now just stopped with no warning. I have a Office Home and Business product licence but it seems this is not good enough. This looks like Microsoft trying to push you on to their more expensive 365 platform and bad customer service from Dropbox as there as they don't tell you this is the case.

Not sure why it just started happening a few days ago. I have another Dropbox account that I have no problem getting into without Microsoft Business.

As of last week, whenever myself or anyone else in our dropbox group attempt to use Microsoft Office Online it gives a message of
"You don't have an Office licenseYour Office 365 account does not have an Office license assigned to it"Up until last week we did not have this problem. We never had bought an office license to use this. Is this a change in dropbox policy? What do I need to do to get these functional again? - Celeste6 years agoDropbox Staff
Hi Researcher12345, thanks for checking in about this!
As a member of a Dropbox Business team, you will need a paid subscription of Office 365 to access such documents online via the Dropbox platform.
One way around this is to contact your team admin to ensure they have the necessary license for the Business team.
Alternatively, if you have a separate, personal, Dropbox account, you can copy the documents in question accross and edit them from the personal account to then re-upload to the Business one.
Let me know if I can help with anything else!

@Celeste2 What is the necessary license for the business team?
- Fiona6 years agoDropbox Staff
Hi Researcher12345!
Welcome to our Community and thanks for your question.
When in a Dropbox Business account, you will need an enterprise Microsoft account with a license that allows editing in Office Online (Business, Business Essentials, Business Premium, ProPlus, E1, E3, E4, or E5). If you're using a tablet larger than 10", Microsoft requires that you have an O365 license to use Office applications.
Here is a presentation of the integration with Microsoft and a help center article with FAQ's .
Let us know if everything works for you, when you try it.
Thank you!

Our business has been using Dropbox for 5+ years. We all have Microsoft Office licenses for software downloaded onto our (50+ laptops). Do you mean to tell me that in order to continue using Dropbox we must now purchase 50+ MS365 licenses at $85/license annually, for as long as we want to use Dropbox?
